I guess when the sun comes out, you just have to take advantage of it, right echo? I hope it doesn't hurt too much - you look great (and happy!) Just got a notice today from recreation.gov today that Big Bend NP is closing the backcountry because of the fire burning in the Chisos. 2 of our 3 nights fall in the window of closure. There's always a chance that they could cancel the closing, or even extend the closing, depending on the fire. We are Zooming with our backpacking buddies tomorrow to talk about Plan B, C, and D. And then I went out to the garage and discovered that a radiator hose on my car split after I pulled in, turned the car off, and went in the house. Radiator fluid everywhere, but at least it waited until I got home and parked. Tomorrow I go to the Endodontist to have a potential root canal evaluated. One of the benefits of my husband working from home is that his car is available for my use. It's definitely been a Monday - but it was a good day in spite of the setbacks. Hope you all had a good day!

Good Afternoon! Well, here anyway. I am back from my latest adventure, and have all of my gear cleaned and stowed properly. It's only been 4 days since I got back. Miracle!
Now that paddling season is over, it is time to concentrate on the legs. Went for an hour bike ride this morning, and all went well. We'll see how tomorrow goes.
I hope everyone is having a wonderful Spring, and looking forward to getting out more.

Good afternoon! I am home from my grand Grand Canyon adventure. The car is unloaded, the second load of laundry is in the washer, but there’s still a lot of chaos. I’ll have it mostly under control by bedtime.

Good Morning My day will be filled with one happy girl who turns 7 years old today. The few things she isn’t happy about got overshadowed by the happy coincidence of her teacher’s computer breaking down and the replacement being delayed so zoom got canceled! Happy Birthday 🎁 The big deal is she got a new hand braked, training wheel free, beautiful bike and helmet, but is very nervous about trying to learn to ride without training wheels. The weather has subtly changed, so the things here that used to bloom mid March are finally in bloom now and we have stopped having a fire overnight, often not even one in the morning to take off the chill. It’s light so late at night too, I’m enjoying that.

May 3rd? Wow This is a rapid flowing year in the strangest ways. I can’t say exactly when it will suddenly skip ahead and leave me wondering where a few weeks or months went to.
But there we have it. When my brother calls at 11 pm in Virginia, and he does, every day, then it is now still light for at least another 40 minutes here in the redwoods. That is how I come to believe in summer again.
The granddaughter had a better birthday than last year, but doesn’t know yet that her mom was put on the bus to the women’s penitentiary that morning. None of us knew at the time. It’s odd but makes me hopeful that she really might break the 6 year cycle of jail and drug use.

My 50th birthday was last Friday. Doesn't seem possible. It's good that I feel nowhere near that old. And my bloodwork from a couple weeks ago supported that notion and verified that my new Paleo/Keto diet is working (see the Diabetes thread in Health & Fitness for details).
It was a "outdoor"-heavy haul:
A new Garmin watch (Instinct) because my 6-year-old FitBit finally kicked-the-bucket. LOTS more features on this watch, and I can wear just one instead of needing to wear both my FitBit and my old Garmin watch on trail runs/hikes. Expensive, but I'll use it everyday, so justified.
An ultralight waterproof vest. I've been looking for one of these for a couple of years. They always seemed too insulated, too bulky, or way too expensive. I almost got to the point of cutting the sleeves off a jacket. Just something to protect my core during trail runs when the forecast calls for 30-40F and rain. If I wore a full jacket, I'd be dead from heat exhaustion within 10 minutes. I have a wonderful fleece vest that I wear in colder temps.
A new headlamp/taillamp set for my bike. I like my current taillamp better (more attachment options) so I'll be keeping it. The headlamp is easily 5x brighter, and rechargeable (vs battery).
A medium-weight neon yellow long-sleeve for bike commutes on chilly mornings. My previous medium-weight was slate gray, so I'd have to wear a reflective vest over it.
New tires for my bike as my current treads were nearly worn through. As "luck" would have it, I got a flat on my last ride (home before deflated)... so the timing was perfect.
That all sets me up for a new pair of trail shoes for Father's Day. :-)

Happy Birthday 🎂 walkswithblackflies and good news about the diet. My husband has luck with that but takes time off from it a few times a year and has a hard time getting re started. She found out the bike has both foot and hand brakes, so her nerves about trying to slow down and forgetting what to do ended up not being an issue.

Yesterday I went on a training run with a local club... up one 700' hill, turn around, up another 700' hill, and back. I do some form of this run every year. And every year I've never been able to run completely up the steeper* second hill (need to break into a hike near the middle).
Until yesterday, that is!
*First hill averages 14% with the steepest section at 33%; second hill averages 17% with the steepest section at 42%

That was interesting.
I had a couple of fillings replaced this morning. The dentist had me reclined slightly below parallel (my head lower than my body). Due to the ungodly amounts of pollen floating about, I have a bit of post-nasal drip... which pooled in the back of my throat and made me feel like I couldn't breathe. But I remained calm and the procedure went smoothly. Until it was over. I was obviously pumping out adrenaline during the procedure, because I got a massive adrenaline dump when they had me sit upright after the procedure. Shakes... sweats/chills... couldn't catch my breath... eyes tearing... the whole thing. I had to sit in the waiting room for 10 minutes until I could even think of driving*. Then I sat in the parking lot for an extra 5 minutes, and purposely sat in the drive-thru line at the Dunkin across the street for another 5 minutes.
Back at the office now, and all I want to do is sleep. I think I'll take a walk.
* all while trying to project nothing was wrong in front of the slightly worried 10-year-old in the room

Ok, still an hour here to wish you Good Morning. The wild garlic reminds me of one of my favorite dishes in China. Just the simplest thing but one I’ve never seen here. Sautéed garlic shoots, a little pork fat and about 2 inch long lengths of garlic greens. It almost looked like a dish of string beans. The weather has been windy but warmer and I’ve been feeling better so we have gotten out to the redwoods a couple times this week. It was lovely. My grandson turned five on Mother’s Day, but his autism means that he hates opening gifts. He’d rather sit and sift grass or pebbles through his fingers. I bought a bag of those corn starch packing peanuts I knew he wouldn’t choke on, then filled a huge box with his gifts hidden in the peanuts. I knew he’d like it but didn’t realize how much my husband and the other two grandkids would enjoy playing in it with him. The gifts were ignored but the peanut ocean was days of fun.
