Greater Pewee in Madera Canyon, Az this past May. Nice shots, graywolf. I think most folks would be amazed at the diversity of bird species found in southern Arizona. Everything from eagles to trogons.

I think most folks would be amazed at the diversity of bird species found in southern Arizona. Everything from eagles to trogons. My brother and I have rented a cabin in Madera Canyon the past three years in May. It's very lush and green with year round streams and the bird watching is phenomenal. I've seen the Elegant Trogon on three occasions.

I love the scarlet macaw. I've a green-wing I got when it was 18 that has been with us 23 years now. I like how the tie-dye matches the feathers.

I'm surprised that the crossbill finch is so unknown! It is not a defect from eating popcorn, it is the way the birds manage to attack pine cones. If you see one on your patio in Tucson, maybe a piñon pine in the area? For that matter, do you get to wander around any piñon forest in autumn to witness the piñon jays attacking the cones? They are like feathered piranha, flocking to attack a tree and the cone chips fly as they do their work, then all fly off for another tree. Anywa, cross-bills are not damaged: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossbill

Not very clear resolution in this photo, but the birds are turkey vultures:

And might as well throw in a wild turkey in Wind Cave National Park:

I'm surprised that the crossbill finch is so unknown! Steve, someone (trinity) already identified it as a common house-sparrow with a possible genetic defect. I called it a cross-billed finch. But, it does look more like a sparrow. It wasn't at my house but rather at a bar with a lush patio.

Your bird pictures are so much better than mine but then again all I have is a point-n-shoot. Kinda hard to get close enough to take a good photo.

This is probably my only bird picture and I don't even know what it is. Last September on the southern shore of Lake Superior.
