Not sure how I/we missed this...6 days ago a major rock slide came down on the Whitney Portal road around the 8000' mark. They hope to have the road open by the usual May 1 opening date, but given the winter we are having, I'm not sanguine. The trails won't be clear t0o hike by then anyway, but if anyone was thinking of applying for early-season permits, you should be aware that the road may or may not be passable.

The rockslide actually occurred before January 20 I misinterpreted some of the stuff I read. Either way, it's still sitting on the road, and it's not completely clear when it will get cleared.

...and it sits on beautiful newly paved roadway...
By the way, Buttermilk Road is closed for the time being...

hikerchick395 Did they blast it? Weather moved back in yesterday (at least here), so I was wondering if they were able to work up there.

Cool! Looks like there's a lot of unstable stuff to bring down and get rid of. Are they able to shove stuff off the edge?

I believe that they have been given permission to push some over. But Lone Pine Creek is below, so I think that there are some limits.
Blasting is supposed to continue today...

And then there's Buttermilk Road...which won't be repaired any time soon. Our own Round Valley Road was partially washed out, then repaired, then more washouts, but not as severe. And certainly not as bad as Buttermilk Road!

I had to look up Buttermilk Road. Is that the access to the McGee Creek TH?

Wow, east side is taking a pounding, much like the west. There's like one road into the valley at the moment...

rebeccad Buttermilk Road goes to the Horton Lakes trailhead and, yes, there is a McGee Creek there but the McGee Creek that most are familiar with (access to McGee Pass)is up around the corner in Mono County Yeah High Sierra Fan...with 50 being in poor shape and 120 and 41 closed, plus 140 always an iffy proposition to stay open, we decided not to go for our February Yosemite Valley trip. The weather wasn't as bad as predicted, last weekend, though...

we decided not to go for our February Yosemite Valley trip. At least there's no shortage of nice stuff on your side of the mountains And yeah, it's the other McGree Creek I have been up. Can't remember stuff for beans. Besides, I wasn't driving that trip.
