I have a tentative plan that puts me in SE Wyoming in July--I'm planning to take advantage of the proximity to some great BPing and the fact that I'll be acclimatized to higher elevation.
I may have a partner (my son), but his work life is complicated and there are several scenarios where he might not be able to go.
I'm down with solo, but would also enjoy having a hiking partner for at least a few days or whatever. I'm looking to do roughly a week-long trip combining trail and off-trail in the Winds or the Gore range. I have some pretty specific ideas for both. (I've hiked pretty extensively in the Gores, never been to the Winds.)
I'm a 52 yo male. (Well, 53 by then.)

Yes, probably Winds. The Gores are kindof my "home base." I love that area with a passion and I have many places I still want to go in that range, and it's a reasonable day's drive from home (Kansas). But I haven't been to the Winds, so as long as I'm in the state already, it seems a good opportunity to get there.

I pretty much only go into the Northeastern Winds over the last decades, and mostly dayhikes these days. I'm just months older than you but I'm not up to a major 8 day trip. I will of course help you here if I can, far enough in Aavance and on a Friday or Saturday I might shuttle you on the West side or give you a ride to/from Jackson from glacier Trailhead on the East. I am however thinking of 3 nights up and over the Ramshorn Plateau on the Southern Absaroka Wall mid to later July if you have any interest. Amazing views of the Winds, Gros Ventre, Tetons, the ruggedly spectacular Absaroka, and a lot more. Very high probability of seeing grizzlies, bighorns, elk, wolves if they're moving through. I realize the Winds are the destination, but if you have any interest a gal from The Sierra Club will likely be going if it comes together. I am also always up for a good dayhike if you want to check out the Absaroka or Northeastern Winds near Dubois. I also know some great stuff in the Gros Ventre between Pinedale and Jackson. I don't think I'd need a shuttle (would probably be looping out of the Elkhart trailhead), but you never know. Would love to see the Ramshorn Plateau, but the Winds would be priority one and I probably wouldn't have time for a second BP trip. Thanks!

I would jump at the chance to go with you, but my work life (like your son's) is very complicated and I don't expect to be able to go then. You will love the Winds. This is a picture of me about 27 years ago(!) on the approach to Gannett Peak.

Hello cweston, I also was interested in checking out Wind River in Wyoming, as someone recommended this at an outdoor exhibition! Is this the general area that you wanted to Bp? Can you tell me more about how this works? I have just completed the Superior Hiking trail in sections this fall, and did 100 miles in Virginia on the AT last June. Backpacking is a new passion for me, so I am kinda a newbee. Just found this forum as a way to connect with others who like to live in a tent and see the world one step at a time! Thanks, Rebecca
Just turned 59, and can averaged about 15 miles a day on the AT. Would I slow you down?

BUT, I think the kind of off-trail travel I have in mind would not be for someone who describes themselves as kindof newbie: you'd probably want your first few trips in the big mountains of the west to be on-trail adventures, I would think. I hope that doesn't sound too patronizing.

If I weren't planning an August Colorado trip. I'd be game.

Cweston, So off trail would have some advantages too, I assume? What are the elevation changes? Do you have any suggestions for finding hiking partners for this area?

Refit,
I live in the Jackson area and will keep my ears open for a partner for you here but post your own thread. If you are going to be out here a while I would suggest seeing if the Grand Teton Climbers Ranch would let you post a card. Teton Mountaineering also has a board to post on. Climbers Ranch doesn't open until June. Great place to meet folks and hike right out the door and get used to altitude a bit before you strap on the big pack.
