In almost 50 years of hiking and backpacking I can count on one hand with fingers left over the number of times I have ever been checked for proper permits. Of course, most of my wanderings have been off trail in less popular areas.

In 2016, there were 30,000 attempts at reserving a permit for the JMT.
THANK GOD MOST OF THEM FAILED.

Whereas I can offer up 3-5 times per year over the past ten years that I've had a permit checked, plus fishing license, plus bear can. We hike in parks a lot, and then we go off trail a day or two out. Once trip along Hetch Hetchy we were checked three times in a single day, three different rangers.

On corridor trails in the Grand Canyon, I count on getting checked every hour or two. For other permit areas I've been, the average is about once every 15-20 days.

In 2016, there were 30,000 attempts at reserving a permit for the JMT. That's because it takes everybody numerous attempts to get through Yosemite's antique equipment. If they had a reasonable system that didn't involve fax machines, that huge number on a computer screen that causes people to freak out wouldn't exist, but it was probably used in the case for more funding. There certainly weren't 30,000 people wanting to hike 200 miles.

I've been permit checked a few times in Idaho. I even saw a fellow and his wife get a $5,000.00 ticket for not having a free self issue permit out in the wilderness.

Toejam, I did the JMT in 2015. I started at Horseshoe Meadows/Cottonwood Pass Tr and had no problem getting a permit to hike nobo and pick up the JMT. I hiked it in July- very low snow year. This year is going to be really challenging with all the snow. Forrester Pass will be tough, for sure.

The problem leading to permits was the supplied water caches at the start began running out (guess it's getting hotter) and overwhelming the first few trail towns by sheer numbers. Eventually it all gets spaced out as hikers find their own pace (til Forrester where some turn away .. hehheh), but entering the Sierra's, even the JMT, Rae Lakes, High Sierra, etc.. are seeing more visitors.
