Very true! I'd be afraid of those too. Regular ones, not so much.

A attack by killer bees hiking in the desert would almost certainly be fatal, and they will attack with very little or no provocation.

Regular ones, not so much. There are no more "regular ones" in Arizona. All honey bees are considered Africanized.

And I suspect that is the critter he is concerned about. Yes, that is correct. There are strategies to avoid confrontations such as not wearing strong scents, dark clothing or running away with arms flaying about. The only successful self-rescue tactic I've read about is to bury yourself in a dense thicket. Bees won't fly into them.

Gotta be bees.
One of my favorite hiking experiences involved lots of big bumblebees crisscrossing my path and totally ignoring me in a blooming rhodo tunnel at Mount Rogers Virginia. What a beautiful place this is in mid-late June when mountainsides are ablaze in color! With open vistas and herds of wild ponies, it felt like heaven on earth.

One of my AZ hiking buddies is allergic to bees, and his love of ruins often brings him close to high-density bee populations. One of his strategies was to visit such areas in winter. I'm not sure if the snow and ice pose less risk than the bees, though.

Bees. You must be allergic to fear them. Not necessarily. I spent literally decades getting (mostly) over an irrational phobia of bees (basically anything that buzzes like that), which sprung from a childhood encounter with a bunch of ground-nesting yellow-jackets at Mt. Rainier. I'm not allergic, and in fact don't even react much (they don't hurt much), but for a very long time I had to fight hard not to scream and run at the sound of one.

I get that rebeccad . It's like having a phobia to snakes or spiders. A lot of people really freak out with all sorts of critters. I tend to have more of a respect for them, so they really don't phase me much, because most will leave you alone when unprovoked. When dd first posted this thread, I didn't even take into account the Africanized bees. I forgot they were here. I got to handle honey bees a few years ago and they no longer phase me. Other stinging things, I use caution around. Wasps are a-holes.

LOL! I am so tempted to take this to the OOC thread Happily, I've mostly defeated the phobia. I don't think I could ever be comfortable handling honey bees, but I no longer scream and run :D

Bees. You must be allergic to fear them. For the record, I'm not allergic to bees or any insect.

Ugh...this makes me not want to move to Arizona. Will have to read up on how to avoid them!
