Yeah... many of you don't make them, think they're stoopid, think they're beneath you, etc. But I like 'em. They give me a goal to shoot for... and more often than not, I achieve them. For those that make 'em... what are yours for 2017?
I haven't solidified mine yet, but they'll be some combo of the following:
Lose around 15 lbs
Work on flexibility
More well-rounded fitness (other than aerobic)
Dunk tennis ball
Events: a winter Spartan race (3/4), a local obstacle race (4/29), and a few 5k's with my daughter (not yet scheduled)
When making a resolution, I try to work on weak points. It's how I started trail running. When I started, I was the worst runner ever. E-V-E-R! Although I could sprint, and had the appearance of being in great shape, I literally couldn't run further than 1/4 mile at a semi-respectable pace. Add any sort of incline and it was over before it began. So one year I set a resolution to run a hilly 3-mile loop at the local State Park. This was before trail running became popular. I can't stand running on roads, and trail running seemed like fast hiking... so it was a natural fit. I thought I had invented the concept of trail running. Long story short, I achieved my goal that year... and several years later found me running ultramarathons in the mountains of PA.
But during that time, (due to change in focus, starting a family, etc) I've gradually fallen away from the weight lifting I used to do in favor of aerobic activity. It has caught up to me. The type of lifting I used to do kept me limber and explosive. I was nearly able to do full spilts, and could dunk volleyballs which was considerable given my 5'7" frame. Now I have zero explosiveness, and if I tried, I'd probably pull a muscle due to lack of flexibility. I've developed low back problems as a consequence.
Getting back to this year's resolution and identifying weak points... Last night, I worked out (P90X) with my neighbor. He was sore so he thought the yoga workout would be good. Let me tell you... I undoubtedly found my weakness... and it is yoga. To work on explosiveness, I'll add plyometrics and sprints. To achieve more well-rounded fitness, I'll add weight lifting and P90X... maybe a backyard obstacle course. To lose weight, I'll focus on diet... as I'm already quite active.
Now I just need to come up with some way of tracking my activity/progress.
