I'm thinking of a 2-3 day hike in mid-March (my spring break). Anyone hiked this area, or have other recommendations for a 2-3 day trip in this region? I was thinking heading up the OHT from the Big Piney bridge and maybe detouring a bit up Greasy Creek for a possible camp site, then looping back to the car via the high-water spur.

I've hiked in Arkansas a couple times more than a decade ago but haven't done overnighters there. I remember having to cross Hurricane creek to start that hike at the same time of year you're going. It wasn't very deep but was very wide and the water very cold. The scenery was good but not great. Prior to my trip I bought a trail guide written by Tim Ernst and actually corresponded with him. He noted some Special Scenic Spots (SSS) that were special for the Ozark Trail but nothing much compared to places I've been in other states. The Arkansas scenery I liked best was in the Buffalo River area.

That's kindof where I am, Driftwoody. Past experience tells me that this part of the country is pleasant but not spectacular, especially during leaf off in the early spring. But I'd really like to get away for a couple days, and there's nowhere any closer to home (Manhattan, KS) that appeals much at all for a BP trip.

There are several Facebook groups for hiking in Arkansas. Lots of people. "Backpacking Arkansas" "Arkansas Hiking" We like Sylamore trail N of Mt View mostly because its close but it's one of the best and not too crowded especially during the week. Nearby are some bike hike trails that get few of either during the week ""

cweston, Hercules Glades Wilderness in SW Missouri is closer than the Arkansas destination you're considering. It has a good trail network conducive to backpacking, and some pretty decent scenery.

Probably the highlights of this trail segment is the creek itself and the natural bridge area, which is a great example of the karst topography along the OHT. I've only hiked three sections of the OHT but this was my favorite amongst those.
