Just introducing myself, I'm a 42 year old guy who is in the very beginning stages of getting into backpacking. My family likes to hike, and loves to camp, so we're deciding to combine the 2! I used to play lots of sports but too many concussions has forced me to give most up outside of golfing. I am here to pick you the pro's brains on things like gear, things to pack and not pack, where to go and such. Hope you all will bear with me and get me off on the right foot!

Welcome to the Forums, softskull.
You've picked a great activity to pursue. Feel free to jump in with whatever questions you may have. We're all just a bunch of know-it-alls here. But, we're willing to share whatever knowledge we have. Whether it's right or wrong.
Tell us a little about yourself.

Welcome to the campfire. Pull up a rock, log, or ultralight chair and tell us a bit about yourself. Also, don't hesitate to visit the gear forum as you start looking for purchasing advice.

Forgot to mention, I live in the Black Hills of SD, lots of great hiking trails so we can get started learning what we don't know by turning some hikes into overnights. Couple questions though after perusing some of the threads, what is ti? Can't think of the other abbreviation right now.

Either Texas Instruments or titanium, I figure.

A very strong plastic that is heat and impact resistant.

welcome to the bp forums, from texas!
titanium is a very lightweight metal; lighter even than aluminum. it is somewhat scarce and historically, it was reserved for strategic purposes such as fighter planes, but after the cold war ended, it began to appear in cooking gear for backpackers.
hope you enjoy the activity as much as we do!

Welcome. You live in a location guys like me dream about. I can't complain about the hiking here in Pennsylvania but the Black Hills is an amazing area.
Ask everything, take what info you want and leave the rest. Half the fun, for me at least, is in learning the lessons along the way. Make mistakes, as long as they are little ones (not the dangerous variety), and learn from them. Enjoy the new activity.

Welcome from the Pacific Northwest! Be careful of the advice you get here, though. Sporks, for example, are the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on backpackers, or humanity for that matter.
