If you really plan on backpacking with another person, do yourself a favor and get a "three-person tent". That does depend on how big you are and how fond of the other person. My spouse and I are very comfortable in even small 2-man tents. But we are both short and fairly narrow, as well as pretty fond of each other (even at the end of 7-day trips), so...YMMV.

I really dig that my wife will snuggle up next to me, even after 5 days on the trail. Woot. Woot.

We've just been playing around, pop on over to the gear section and get to asking gear questions and, OK, we'll still play around but we'll also offer you a dizzying array of sound advice. Ummm, do ask your questions before summer starts, cause by then a lot of us will be in the woods.

Don't underestimate how much all the rest of the *stuff* weighs. This brings up another good point. Everything in your pack needs to justify its inclusion. If you "might" need something, then, you probably don't. An exception is your first aid kit, but even with this, don't go crazy. Look for things that have multiple uses. Wrap 4" of duct tape around one of your trekking poles....don't bring a whole roll, even a small one.
