Up here Mountain Equipment Co-op runs a used gear classified on their website, but I'm sure if I looked hard enough I could find a used gear shop around the city (Toronto).
I tend to buy new, but would never turn my nose up at a well taken care of piece of gear for a good price. Climbing protection is excluded from that though.

Here in Salt Lake there is "2nd Tracks" just down the street from REI. It's a consignment/retail model for cost-effective gear. I've been able to sell a lot of our families used gear here.

Don't know of any stores specializing in used gear in Toronto. If you ever come across one, let me know! MEC, in addition to their used gear section on their website, also has a semi-annual gear swap (I think REI has them in the US) where members can sell used gear and the store sells off end-of-lines, returns, etc. I think the next one in TO is Oct 18.

Ditto, should you ever come across any. I always manage to hear about the MEC gear swap days about two days too late. The advanced notice on this one is much appreciated.

A lot of great sources on the interweb, Wilderness Exchange, Sierra Trading Post, Backcountry gear, etc. but you need to know the best price so you will know when its a deal, I got a tent, sleeping bag and pad 1/2 price from BA when they had a sale
