I have fine, short hair. If I don't have access to a shower, then a hat is what I use, otherwise I resemble a troll doll.

I saw this photo and thought of this thread. I've been for a dip in the stream, and am drying my hair.

I keep my hair short, because I've never been able to stand long hair. Every third day I wash it with a couple drops of Dr Bronners, with the help of a friend and my Sea to Summit bucket, and a cup. Far, far from the water sources and with a warm pot of water for the initial washing, and the bucket of cold for rinsing. It dries in about an hour of afternoon sun.

Sometime in the next few years, we will probably tackle an extended trip, on trail or overseas, that will finally tempt me to cut my hair short and enjoy that kind of easy care. When all this long hair goes, it will go completely--I'll get one of those very short cuts that doesn't require anything to work and will towel dry.

I always wore my hair cut short -- until I started backpacking. I find it's actually easier to manage longer hair with a ponytail or wrapped up bun-like. But my hair is pretty fine and has enough body to be stupid, so with short hair I needed to wash and blow dry it every day or it looked like bad bedhead. Perhaps my favorite "wardrobe" piece is my half-Buff. It hides a multitude of sins.

I was thinking of one of those 1" cuts that is meant to stand on end. But the truth is, it won't matter how it looks, because I wear a hat about 100% of the time out there. I just think a short cut that is more washable would be nice on a long trip.

rebeccad there are cornstarch baby powders, sometimes with aloe in them. That is what I use when away from showers for several days.

mk I'm not sure how I missed that post, but it made me laugh, because that's about how I feel about my hair. I did like mine long just for the fact it was easy to pull into a pony tail and hide under a hat. Unfortunately, I have to live in the real world most of the time, so hats and pony tails don't work most of the time. I keep it short mostly for ease of styling and it just looks better on me.

I envy y'all - not so many lakes out West... You just don't hang out in the right parts of the West. I do almost all my backpacking in the West, and have plenty of opportunities to go jump in a lake. It does require a certain willingness to share your bathtub with snowbanks and icebergs...

share your bathtub with snowbanks and icebergs... It takes a good deal of fortitude to dunk yourself in ice-cold water -- I find myself lacking in that particular character trait. I even have to warm up the wet wipes! (my experience has mostly been desert southwest -- no water)

I even have to warm up the wet wipes! (my experience has mostly been desert southwest -- no water) Shoot, in the desert, you should be looking for the cool wet-wipes! When I'm out there, I'm usually looking for a way to cool off (except of course when the weather tips the other way, and I can't get warm. We usually head to the desert at spring break, and temps can go either way that time of year--and usually do). I don't know if the ability to take icy baths is innate or acquired, but it's definitely convenient for backpackers

You'd think I'd be able to stand the cold water, having grown up swimming in northern Wisconsin lakes. Although at 53, my showers are definitely cooler than they used to be ...

I have medium to long hair. For any adventure, I usually braid it wet before I even leave the house, kind of sealing the clean in. I try to keep it that way as long as possible before I resort to a messy grimy ponytail/bun type of mess. I love baseball caps, so it's usually a bun tied through the back of the cap when I give up on the braids.

I have very thick wavy hair that I typically keep long. I usually wash it every other day at home and can go another day on trail. After that my scalp gets maddingly itchy. I usually just wash with water or a dot of Dr Bronners. My scalp is very sensitive to pressure to doing head bands, braids or ponytails for very long gives me stubborn headaches.
I have found my main issue is that it is so thick it will take days to dry, especially in the damp Pacific Northwest. So I cut it short if I have a season of longer trips planned. Not a helpful solution but it's the one that works best for me these days.
