The article lists five reasons. Personally, I've never tried energy drinks. The whole idea of them seemed unhealthy from the git-go. Here's Why the Army Told Soldiers to Cut Down on Energy Drinks (and You Should Too) Research on 1,200 deployed soldiers shows just how bad they can be. By Minda Zetlin Co-author, 'The Geek Gap'@mindazetlinA new post in the official Pentagon science blog warns soldiers to avoid drinking multiple energy drinks, after reviewing a survey of more than 1,200 active duty soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Army offers some pretty compelling reasons why soldiers should drink fewer energy drinks. Those reasons make sense for you and me as well.link

I make my own "energy drink" as follows
1 pkg Kool-aid, flavor of your choice 8 tbs sugar ⅜ tsp salt ⅛ tsp potassium chloride (Nu-salt or Also-salt)
This about 1/2 the sugar you would normally add to Kool-aid.

@idahowalker, I use white sugar, but you could use any type you want. The recipe makes 2 quarts, so for trips, I split these in to quart batches in ziplock snack bags, which probably wouldn't work as well with honey, but unprocessed, turbano, or brown sugar would probably work fine.

When we cut sugar out of our diet last August, I was amazed that Ed also stopped his energy drinks. THRILLED, even! They are awful. He drank 3 a day, pretty religiously.
He's been energy drink sober since, I am happy to say. And completely sugar free. We haven't had a need for things like electrolyte drinks. I am going to buy a bottle of SaltStick as our activity levels have gone through the roof. That, paired with proper hydration, will help with muscle cramping and recovery.

I'm guilty of a sugar free Monster or Red Bull. What I've learned over time though is that it's really the cold and the carbonation that I'm after. I think more than anything it's psychological for me.

If that is all you need, then try drinking La Croix.

I've never used energy drinks, religiously avoided caffeinated drinks, and generally avoided all sugary and diet drinks. So far that has worked for me. But my blood sugar level was a bit high at my last check up so now I'm staying away from all refined sugar and avoiding complex sugars (like fruit and fruit juices) and cutting down on carbs until my next blood work up shows my blood sugar levels are back to normal. As it turns out, maintaining a low carb diet is difficult for me. I like bread and other high carb foods.

White sugar or brown? Honey? I been staying away from white sugar. Nutritionally, sugar is sugar. You may use less honey or brown sugar because they have more flavor, but despite all the advertising claims, the body handles them all the same. I have long been aware that energy drinks are awful stuff, and never wanted them, though I'll quaff an iced coffee when it's hot I get the sugar-free kind. For that carbonated feel, I agree about the lightly flavored soda water. It does the job nicely. Basically, drinking calories is pretty much a bad idea all around. BTW, if I need more electrolytes, I'd rather eat potato chips

I had to learn to "like" these. The first time I tried one the carbonation without the sweetness almost made me spit it out like something was wrong with it. They are good, just don't try one while thinking soda at the same time.

Our taste buds are so completely used to the sugar that we come to expect it. My taste buds have changed so much that now when I drink sweetened drinks of any kind, I think there is something wrong. It's like an assault on my taste buds.

In fact, brown sugar actually starts out as white sugar and then molasses is added. So if one's aim is to avoid refined/processed sugars, technically brown sugar is processed more than white sugar.

Energy drinks? Just alternate between caffeine pills and nicotine pills. You never build up immunity to either one, and you will be hiking like the energizer bunny on crystal meth!
