It's hard to take advice on pants from a guy who doesn't wear any.

I just don't get all the hating on convertibles' appearance. I probably wouldn't wear them to a wedding, but beyond that, who cares?

It's hard to take advice on pants from a guy who doesn't wear any. I'm wearing my convertible pants. They are designed with an ultralight mode and a heavyweight mode. The zipper is at the top.

Columbia has some decent ones. Cabelas did as well, don't know who made them for Cabelas though. They dry quick and had nice pockets.

I really like by Eddie Bauer Convertibles and use them for all occasions - bicycle touring, hiking and occasionally around town. Like has been said, I'd probably not wear them in a formal situation with a sports coat or suit jacket, but they are pretty darn versatile for almost everything else.

JMO but I don't think it's the zipper that makes them look like hiker wear but the colors (tan, olive green), the elastic waist with built-in webbing belt, and baggy with cargo pockets. Avoid those. I'd look at brands like Kuhl, Prana, maybe Columbia, North Face, and look for pants with a real waist, slim legs, in dark gray or black if you can.

My convertibles are now used exclusively for interior painting and exterior fence staining. Not being the most mechanically inclined, my experience when attempting to rejoin the lower with the upper resulted in a vocabulary digression to my best Boston street language. Been wearing long pants ever since.

Not being the most mechanically inclined, my experience when attempting to rejoin the lower with the upper resulted in a vocabulary digression to my best Boston street language. LOL! Mine have little labels on the zipper to say which leg goes where. But as I've said before, I almost never zip off the legs, and in fact would be happy to have non-convertible hiking pants. I just haven't found any that fit (and are cheap enough for this cheapskate). I do sometimes zip them off when doing laundry on the trail, to rinse mud from the lower parts without getting the slower-drying parts all wet, somewhat as Ben suggests.

On my TNF pants, one leg has a red zipper, and the other leg is blue.
