Defintely national forests. For two reasons. Frist, they encompass the greatest area. Second, that's where the bulk of the wilderness areas are located. Ditto I've never done a backpacking trip that wasn't in a National Forest. I've hiked in National Parks, and I've visited state parks. I've traveled across and hunted on BLM land, but the vast majority of land I'd want to spend a lot of time on is NF land.

I chose National Forests, often less people and less regulations and hassles getting permits, and very beautiful scenery.

I'm going with National Forests due to greatest square miles, proximity, access and as trinity mentioned most Wilderness. Same here. It only took about three seconds for me to decide.

It's a no brainer... NFs win hands down !!
Besides, NP permits/regs are already a YUGGE pain in the ass. Imagine what it would be like if everyone was forced to go there ?? Backpacking would be extinct.

I didn't vote because I could not decide. I live next to ONP, and I mean right close. Almost all the good stuff on the Olympic Peninsula is in ONP. It is almost completely surrounded by NF, but the good stuff is inside. But if I moved back over across the Puget Sound, then I would say USFS lands.

I'm enjoying reading everyone's comments; interesting thread!
My favorite trips are to designated Wilderness areas in National Forests, but my most frequent trips are to Guadalupe Mountains National Park and Big Bend National Park. GUMO does include a federally-designated Wilderness Area also; which encompasses a significant portion of the park.
Also, FWIW, I've never had any difficulty getting a backpacking permit at GUMO; it's just not that popular of a national park.

Shhhhh. We don't want word getting out about what a great place GUMO is ... Given the absence of water in the back country, I'm not sure there's much danger of this turning into a popular backpacking destination. Though in all honesty, it is looking likely that I'll be making my first backpacking trip there later this month. So go ahead, blame @scottmc .

It hasn't stopped the popularity of Grand Canyon NP as a backpacking destination. I thought that, too RumiDude. True backpackers will continue to discover GUMO, I'm sure, but the lack of any services (lodge, restaurant, camp store) will probably deter a segment of the population.

He did say "backpacking" was limited--so I'll maintain my right to dayhike the national parks Good catch, " rebeccad"! I just settled on NF but I'd happily dayhike the other choices anytime! I picked NF because I'm not what you would call "a people-person". When I put in the work to bust my hump to make it to a suitable site, I don't want to be around people that take the shortcut and drive to the nearest parking area and walk a whopping 10 minutes to set up their noisy, party camp. Also, I always see more trash on the trails of other places versus the NF. I ain't yo maid!

State Parks. Except for Finger Lakes NF, White Mountains, and Acadia, there really aren't any National lands here in the NE.
I live 2 miles from a fantastic State Park, and I visit State Parks a couple times a week.
