I'm in the Tri-Cities, about 2.5 hours away. Can't give many Spokane details, but it's kind of distant from most of the well-known WA hiking (Cascades, Olympics). But being far to the east, it's within reasonable reach of the Salmo-Priest Wilderness (NE corner of WA), some of the Idaho spots (like Hells Canyon, including Seven Devils). Not terribly far from Lake Chelan and the edges of Glacier Peak Wilderness, maybe the eastern Pasayten Wilderness. With a little driving patience, the Wenaha-Tucannon Wildernesss (SE WA) is nice.
All of that involves an hour or three of driving, though.

Hi rangersven, I've lived in Spokane since 2002 and like it very much. As far as hiking goes I generally wind up driving about 1-3 hours to get to most places. There is some "in town" hiking in Spokane but it is limited to day hiking. You can camp downtown but I don't recommend that Places I find myself visiting are: Hells Canyon, Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness, The Wallowas, The Bitteroots, Priest Lake, The Salmo Priest Wilderness and The Cabinetes. There's a book out there by Rich Landers "100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest" that I would recommend as a starting point if you plan on moving here or visit for a prolonged period of time. What specifically are you looking for? Hope this helps! Randy

Hi RS, You have done your research for sure! There is a good meet up group that is very active: Inland Northwest Hikers. I'm not sure where the "South Hills" day hiking area is. Is it the back side of Iller Creek? I hike at Iller Creek regularly. I live on the South Hill near Manito myself and love the area. The Perry District is a little more "up and coming" but nice. I'm headed to the Lantern (Perry District) tonight for dinner w/ my family Spokane is indeed a real estate bargain compare to Portland and is the reason my nephew moved back here recently. Traffic is much better here too. Please let me know if you need more information. You can always PM me if needed. Sincerely, Randy
