ArticleIncluding Bears Ears, which I've never been to but have certainly heard about. Thanks, Obama.

I have been to Bear's Ears, but not the other. I actually saw Bear's Ears for the first time while volunteering at Natural Bridges N.M.

Glad to see this. I really hope the new administration and Congress don't screw it up. Another accomplishment in Obama's legacy. Good for him.

It covers a huge area. Grand Gulch, Comb Ridge, Valley of the Gods, Dark Canyon, Indian Creek and Bridger Jack Mesa just to name some of the areas. It surrounds Natural Bridges which is already a National Monument, all very amazing places. I've been to all of those areas and many more through there. The whole area is very diverse and some of the most wonderful terrain to travel with rucksack that I have ever seen. It certainly does not need countless drill pads or mining. Keep it protected and natural.
That road through the Bears Ears area is amazing.

Any time there is any progressive action by the government, the Utah delegation is usually steaming. Actually they should only blame themselves. The have had three+ years to enact their own proposal knowing full-well the deadline for action would be the end of the Obama term in office. Several years ago the Skull Valley Indian Tribe sought to create a low-level radioactive waste site. It took less than a year for the Utah delegation to convert the adjacent Cedar Hills WSA to Cedar Hills Wilderness. By creating the wilderness area they nullified use of the nearby reservation for a radio-active hazardous material waste site. So in the end, it is the Utah Congressional Delegation, San Juan County Officials, Utah Legislature and Governor who did not meet the deadline thus the competitor organization won the bid.

Any trail maps? Any trails? Huh? LOL Many, many established areas with trails in this huge Bears Ears Monument. Many of the areas I spoke of in my first post up there are on National Geographic Trails Illustrated Manti La Sal 703 has all of Dark Canyon and the areas surrounding Natural Bridges. Nat Geo TI Grand Gulch/Cedar Mesa Plateau 706 has all of Grand Gulch and Comb Ridge and surrounding areas. So tons of trails and tons of off trail too in some very unique areas withing that one huge new Monument there. As for Gold Butte Monument area that's all on the Nat Geo TI Lake Mead 204. There are a few 4wd roads in there but it is some good off trail terrain. It is one crazy cut off place on the other side of the Orton arm, away from Las Vegas. I think I saw the Bundy place when we went in. Dont know for sure but whoever lived there had a nasty attitude and a steel, welded sign on a hill by the road that had a cartoon character hanging his nose over the sign and words..."I never saw anyone find anything in there but a flat tire and hot radiator" or something to that effect. They had some terse no trespassing signs and were spewing water like it was nothing. Must have had a good well and they just wasted it. Go on past there and you are in a wild and wonderful place.

The next time somebody suggests to you that we should "give back" control of Federal LAnds to States remind them of what Travis informed all of us of so well: There is nothing to give back; these states NEVER had title to those lands; in fact forever giving up title to those lands was a condition of statehood verified in their state constitutions.
Every acre of Federal Land belongs to every American in equal measure. Remind your elected representative of that if they start catering to deceitful special interest charlatans.

I worked at Natural Bridges once upon a time. Gorgeous unspoiled area full of riches and sacred for the native people, so I fully support this. People who are against NM designation are generally quite ignorant to what it means. Anyway, the Antiquities Act can't be reversed as such, so it'll be very hard for incoming administration to reverse - they'd have to get congress to approve as I understand it.
