Yep, it's on like Donkey Kong! I started out with 11.5, zeke started at 11.4. Then when z vs.b started, he dropped to 6.9, my A1c was then also 6.9. Then zeke's next test went to 6.3! Caramba, I said MY next test better match that or I would be pissed! I just got my new test results: 6.0! Hah!! Like zeke. my tests are also going to every four months; my next one is in November. And yes, the challenge is to see if we can both drop below 6 and get to "normal" 5.5. Impossible? We will see.

5.8! How's it feel when you are slapped with a glove, bp2go? I am now in the Pre-diabetic range, but we all know that is just like being a little pregnant. No such thing. I am continually watching my diet, even at PG, and my portions. That, and exercising. I do have an advantage in that regard, as I am retired so have plenty of time for hours walking or riding a bike. My other health factors also do not limit my ability to exercise.
I spent 3 weeks on the road, eating burgers for one meal a day, it seemed like. I ate well while on my bike tour with rebeccad and cityman, only watching my portions. Next blood test is in late Jan. Oh, and my blood pressure did not move, despite my new daily regimen of beets. Weight went up 2 pounds, but I say that is a normal fluctuation.

You are annoying! I fart in your general direction. I can't match your exercise opportunities but I am doing my best to get under 6 even so. November 8 will tell the tale. Well done, zeke.

Zeke asks "5.8! How's it feel..." Steve replies: Pretty damn good! My new A1c is also 5.8. And my blood work shows "excellent" (the doctor's word) results for cholesterol, kidneys, etc. She said that for a guy hit hard by diabetes, I'm quite healthy. I agree. May I also add: November is Diabetes Awareness Month. About 30% of the population is affected by incipient or full diabetes. About 100 people a day visit this forum. Stats would suggest that 25 or more should be interested in this thread. But is sits qietly, basically waiting for zeke or me to add something. Some have mentioned the need to change lifestyle and some have said that's a hard thing for people to manage, so that's why life goes on. I say baloney. It's a bit ironic that I am doing so well. I basically get no exercise (that pesky Charcot foot) and the one hard change in my lifestyle (I hate that word) life has been giving up on trips to the mountains to find the wildflowers or chase butterflies. I can't see well enough to enjoy those activities now. Otherwise, life is good. I spend my time learning more about the disease. I'm trying to earn my merit badge in biochemistry. I surprise my doctors with my new vocabulary. But enough about me. I wanted to throw in yet another plea that people get past denial or fear; get a blood test and see what your glucose level is? A doctor can do a glucose tolerance test.Harder to do is find a health fair where eye checks and diabetes tests are routine (and free.) Even a simple one-day test could show something. Everybody knows somebody with a test meter! Ask to them help you with a finger poke. It's perfectly safe, painless, and fast. That friend will tell you what your number indicates (it can look crazy, depending on when you last ate!) If you have some interest or questions, feel free to PM me. I would be glad to chat.

Sort of misleading journalism. It doesn't distinguish bad from good, so ALL carbs are bad. And then it adds"last year sugar companies paid researchers in the 1960s and 1970s to downplay the role sugar has on health. " The whole article continues to talk about sugar. And most people think it's the sugar added to foods that is the bad stuff. Sugary soda, candy, etc., pure sugar is evil. The article does quickly mention that carbs turn into sugar but I don't think the word glucose got any play. So the guy who once ate pasta before exercise now eats fatty foods, avoids carbs, and "can't exercise as well as before!" Bullshit! Age and blood pressure are as much involved. Eat a beet once in awhile, buddy! Get some nitric oxide into your system. But yes, it sort of over-did the sugar mentions but hey, it maybe got some people looking to avoid sugar. Now if they don't know that pretty much every bite of food that is not meat is carbs, then what?. Yesterday I actually joined Diabetes Daily. I didn't want to but I need to PM a person wjith a really scared story about Charcot. But reading many of the posts in that forum was disheartening. The many examples of denial even when people freaking KNOW they are diabetic, posting messages about how casually they deal with it. Remember, denial is not just a river in Egypt. And just look how quiet this tread is, despite the stats that suggest it should be more of interest. Oh well! And hey, Florida Guy, how did you find a station on Oklahoma?

Station showed up in my FB news feed. Must've been triggered by some of the things I have shared on FB.

After spending time reading the comments and problems on Diabetes Daily, I was carrying over my irritation about people who seem oblivious! So reading the TV article just pushed the wrong buttons with regard to sugar, sugar, sugar. It struck me as not as clear a message. But as you said, any push in the direction of limiting carbs is good. And even as I say that, I remind you that your are lucky enough to get lots of sugar-burning time in on the trail. And yes I said sugar...as a joke after my little rant.
I think today I will investigate DiaTribe again. I want to see what people have said about Charcot?
And I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that the several who sihned up last month have never returned. I sent them eash a "form letter" to welcome then and ask that they try to stop in at least a few minutes once a week. Five days later, not a single reply or visit recorded.

My Dr has reduced my Metformin to one pill a day, 500mg. Says we can see what happens in Jan when the next blood test is scheduled.

So, this study about Type 2 diabetes is all over the news. "T2 Diabetes can be reversed with weight loss!" I am here to tell you, it doesn't have to be that hard. I know many people who struggle with weight loss. Reducing the carb intake and getting a little walking in each day is not like weight loss.
Carbs are what is bad for a diabetic. Cut out most bread, potato, rice, Coke, etc... and life becomes manageable. Limit portions of those items. I still eat 5 ounces of baked potato occasionally, as well as a cup of rice. I mean, once a week. I have switched my bread to a whole grain that has 12 carbs per slice. Yes, the slices are smaller and thinner, but I still get to eat a sandwich for lunch.
I snack on fresh fruit. I still eat cereal and milk for breakfast most mornings. I limit my carb intake to 60 g per meal. Some people try to limit their carbs to less than 100 g a day, but with my exercise, I am doing fine with 200 g per day. I recently was directed to reduce my Metformin med to one a day, cutting my intake by half.
That study had people drastically changing their diet. It doesn't have to be that way. If a person wants to get healthier and has T2 diabetes, get in touch with me. I can be a partner along the path to better eating.

As of this morning's Dr visit, I am no longer on meds for my diabetes. He told me I was now a diabetic controlling my disease with my diet and exercise. He said we would recheck A1c levels in 4 months, to verify I was not needing the Metformin. I was down 6 pounds, and BP was excellent (114/76). They also took a UA sample to check on my kidney function, as my insurance company requested. We'll get the results of the blood work in a couple of days.
I am still not below 200#, but 202.5 by the Dr scale. Naked, I am getting very close to 200, so we'll see. Need to continue burning calories by walking or biking 3 or more times a week. I feel better when I am exercising in the mornings. Currently, I am studying for some exams, so that has my full attention, but in 2 weeks... Look out!
