We're moving to Redding in January! So this trip is on for 2017! Anyone want to come with? Maybe. Lost Coast is on my list.

I just got back from doing the Lost Coast hike, both northern and southern parts. It was beautiful. Decent weather, one bear encounter, lots of other wildlife, rain and sun....

Were you there for the king tide? How was that?

Three of us will be there for a short overnight from Usal campground in a week. Yes... wettest/foggiest time of year... wondering how full the gulches are between there and Jackass Gulch? Bridges? Logs for crossing?

I was just there, and it only rained during the night, but the gulches were very full and moving fast. I took my shoes off, water was knee high in a couple places. Only one area had a log for crossing, but I can't remember which. I do remember that I had to walk inland a little before getting to it. Make sure you get the waterproof map from the BLM. Way better than any other map I've seen.

I hiked part of the trail in June. Good time to go. Did an out and back north of Shelter Cove and also a day hike on the ridge along the southern part of the trail. Beautiful place, maybe not as isolated as I was expecting. Fairly busy if not crowded. The beach hiking is a slog. Water was no problem for us, many springs drop from the cliffs. Rocks and debris drop from the cliffs and seaside ledges, so keep some distance. Geologically, the land is lifting, you can see rounded rocks and boulders from the waves fifteen feet above you embedded in the unstable cliffs. Great wildlife, we saw a sea otter and many seals. Hike south to keep the wind at your back, wind can be brutal. The ridge hike we did was beautiful with some great views. Well worth it.

I hiked part of the trail in June. Good time to go. Fairly busy if not crowded. That's why I went in November. After leaving the trailhead in Mattole Beach, I didn't see another person until the end when I left. But yeah, walking on the sand is pretty rough after about 5 miles with 40lbs on your back.

I think some of the roads are a mess when wet, so I did not do it, and my foot was bothering as well. I think the road in the center is paved, and driving down to the southern wasn't too bad, but I was warned not to actually go down the turn off that goes down to trail.
