Yesterday my wife and I went on a hike in a local park...open to hikers, bikers, dogs, etc. We met a number of bikers on the trail, most made some small amount of noise and then barreled past us as we stepped out of the way. But there was one group, three generations, that was different. The older man and his daughter were teaching the young boy (grandson?) how to ride on the trails. And when they came up to us, dad stopped his bike and let us walk through. His daughter and grandson, pedaling fast to keep up with the old man, didn't. His daughter said "excuse us!" as she plowed along more or less out of control. The kid followed her lead without saying a word.
I should have thanked the older guy...the only one all day who followed protocol.

If you happen to go to Nepal or Tibet, yaks have right of way. you better be up on the inside part of the trail when they pass.

Around where I live, bikers on the trail yield to no one. For that and other reasons, I rarely do local dayhikes any more. Its not worth the aggravation.

As a horse person who also hikes, it is always nice when hikers yield, and usually surprising when bikers do. Just try not to pick the moment when the horse is passing to shake out your poncho or open your umbrella. Even my horses, who have limited trail experience (mostly used to going to horse shows, spoiled brats!), are generally well behaved and acclimate well to hikers and bikers. A responsible horse rider should inform you if you need to give a particular horse more space.

If everyone would just be courteous to each other, avoid confrontation, and keep others in mind at all times, there would be no need for "who yields" triangles. I've been in plenty of circumstances where it was perfectly reasonable to yield when you didn't have to. It really doesn't bother me (when hiking) to step off the trail and let a mtn biker come barreling down the trail unimpeded. They are outside enjoying themselves, and that makes me happy. Same with horses, in that, I don't mind stepping off the trail to let a few horses trot by, even though they are told to yield to hikers. Its much easier for me to step off the trail than horseback riders to halt their horses and move them off trail. Plus the kids like to watch them walk by.
My main concern is that hard line rules like this create divisiveness between user groups at a time we need to be working together to protect our interest in public lands.

Usually I step off on the downhill side and then check with the rider to make sure that's where they want me and that I'm far enough off-trail. Never had a problem, and the riders are always good about communicating what their horse needs from me. Same with horses, in that, I don't mind stepping off the trail to let a few horses trot by, even though they are told to yield to hikers. I've honestly never been on a trail where horses are supposed to yield to anyone.

I've honestly never been on a trail where horses are supposed to yield to anyone. Its pretty uncommon afaik, but there are 2 local "open spaces" where hikers aren't instructed to yield to any other users.
