Welcome, from Texas, and thank you for your service. I'm also (very) gradually upgrading some of my ~30 year old kit. Also upper middle-aged, but still a full time wage slave. Can definitely relate to being WYSIWYG, too.

Well, Monty Python and The Holy Grail is not quite set in ancient Rome, but those medieval battle scenes are pretty gory, especially the rabbit one. And the guy guarding the bridge is pretty baller, IMO.

Welcome from another guy in the Texas Hill Country. I served in the Navy also, Naval Aviation. And I'm also a former Boy Scout and still an active scouter. And I grew up in California, raised my family there and did lots of backpacking all over California before moving to Texas. I'm still using the same backpack I bought in the 80s, but everything else has been freshened up over the years. Hope we can provide some advice and insights to help you enjoy your return to backpacking.
