I switched last year from a Gigapower to an Olicamp Ion. I haven't done a scientific comparison of fuel efficiency, but the weight reduction is nice. BigLoad My Gigapwer wimped along at 10K this week and nearly exhausted a canister in three meals. Spewing a lot of unburnt fuel. What is experience with the Ion at altitude? I am about ready to go back to my old liquid fuel mainstay, a MSR Simmerlite. I bought a new Whisperlite International for WY winter

I've used the Ion at 10k in typical CO early autumn temps and I thought it did pretty well. My only knock is that wind impairs its efficiency, but that's no surprise. Of my canister stoves, it's still the one I reach for first.

What is experience with the Ion at altitude? I do not know if this will help but I use a MSR canister stove. I have found that the canister does well when I keep the canister warm, at night, in my sleeping bag, even with large elevation changes.

I do not know if this will help but I use a MSR canister stove. I have found that the canister does well when I keep the canister warm, at night, in my sleeping bag, even with large elevation changes. edit: I was getting fuel to exit the canister well, the flame head was not exposed to wind but there were noticeable signs of incomplete combustion. Notably some smell that was not raw fuel and long boil times for a 700mL Ti cup. I have owned MSR Pocket Rockets and still use. When I have to cook or for a group I like my older MSR Wind Pro, which does better at altitude than the little burner heads like the PR and the Gigapower because of burner design. And it is a twin to my Simmerlite. The fail I talked happened in 50-54 deg, actually warm evenings and mornings. Yeah, I have used hand warmers and beanies for cozies to coax fuel from canisters, but I am unhappy with those sort of gymnastics to just burn a cup or two of water. Except the joy I get when I ask GF to put the freaking cold canister in her parka A good test of your relationship. I was at one of my local outfitters that had a "new" winter grade canister at X 2 times the price of the regular.

Looking at that towel, I have to say... l carry half of an old cloth diaper as a dishtowel. Very light, very compact, and because it’s cotton it actually dries the dishes. It’s thin and light enough to dry itself pretty quickly too. I may switch to the same for my bathing towel; those synthetics don’t seem to dry very well.

Since the piezo ignition on my Soto stove stopped working I also carry a small Swedish Light my Fire steel. Totally reliable even when wet and the 'fuel' lasts years.

greymouse - that 'table' is brilliant! I can see the SVEA 123 or my Optimus 8r chugging away on one of those. What did you make it out of?
