I didn't know he's remarried after losing his wife in that tragic canoeing accident in Canada a number of years ago. I haven'tread "Carry Home", but should probably put it on my list. I do enjoy his work.

Currently reading First They Killed My Father about the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot in Cambodia. I was a toddler when it was happening in the late 70's but completely embarrassed that I knew nothing about this until I visited Cambodia last year. Not a word of it was mentioned in our school classes. I read the book you read also before I went to Phnom Pehn about 10 years ago. It is a heartbreaking site to visit. There is a school (S21) that they turned into a prison/torture chamber. There were pictures of the victims/prisoners brought there. A lot of these "enemies" were young..10, 6 etc. Then a one hour flight away there is Angkor Wat, a beautiful world heritage site that is the total opposite feeling of S21. It showed such a huge contrast about the beauty man can achieve and the evil that man can do. But great book. And like you I was 10 when it happened and never heard about it either. If you ever get a chance to visit you should. Cambodia is a beautiful country.

“Land on Fire: The New Reality of Wildfire in the West,” by Gary Ferguson. Montana author Ferguson examines the current state of wildfires in the west - their causes, attempts to control and contain them and their future impact. Unfortunately, with the advent of "megafires", it's not a pretty picture. He predicts more frequent and more intense fires in the future with not much we can do about it. I fear he may be correct. Welcome to the new West. I know this is a book forum, but if you liked that, you may like "The Big Burn" on Netflix. It gives the history of the Forest Service and the forest fire of 1910.

The Radium Girls, Kate Moore. True story of young girls in the 1910-30's who used radium to paint dials on instrument panels and watches to make them glow in the dark and the sickness that resulted.
American Swastika- Inside the white power movement, Robert Futrell
Both pretty good books but kind of drawn out too much. In my opinion.

Coming up on Halloween. Time to reread some H.P. Lovecraft stories. Alone. In a dark room, late at night...

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets... I've read it twice before but my daughter is reading it for school. I'm reading at the same time so we can discuss it and she actually pays attention instead of skimming through.

A Time-Life book called "Cactus Country (The American Wilderness)" with text written by Edward Abbey. Initially published in 1974. This is, IMO, a great series by Time/Life. The volume desrrt dweller is referring to is part of the Time/Life series entitled "The American Wilderness". I think I have nearly the entire set as it pertains to North America (27 volumes). There are additional volumes that cover wild areas in Europe, Central America, Australia and other regions as well. When I travel to an area to sight-see or hike, I always try to read the volume that pertains to it before hand. I often take it with me for reading on the way and while there. Provides a lot of insight - history flora, fauna, biology, geology, etc. You can pick them up very cheaply (like $2.00 a volume) at a lot of used book stores and flea markets, etc. They are quite informative and the photos are great. I really enjoy my set. Great addition to any outdoor library. www.librarything.com/series/Time-Life%3A+The+American+Wilderness

I am really behind on my reading, it seems. Here are 11 books Elon Musk recommends we read. I've read 4 of the 11. Business Insider 11 books Elon Musk thinks everyone should read Jeremy Berke and Shana LebowitzMusk says that reading books — from epic works of fantasy like the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy to complex how-tos on building rockets — is crucial to helping him achieve success.link

I'm in the middle of this book... While I'm enjoying it, it's a bit more technical than I was looking for. There is a reason why I changed majors in the middle of Microbiology at the university.

How the Scots invented the Modern World, by Williams. All about the Scottish Enlightenment, which gave us Separation of Church & State, Democracy as a populist movement, and other things. As a brief synopsis of the book, try Wiki

Military Misfortunes: The Anatomy of Failure in War by Eliot Cohen and John Gooch. It's one of the books on my professional reading list that I'm finally getting time to read.
