so I am considering taking leave and going home to Oregon for a couple weeks in the summer. Possibly July or August. I was wanting to find a place to do some off-trail exploration with a couple buddies over a 4-5 day period within the state's borders. I know a lot of the trails, and know quite a bit of the Detroit area, so I already have some ideas. However, I would love to get some ideas from the community.
So what are some off trail areas that are among the most breathtaking, and perhaps least known in Oregon? Thanks in advance for your input!

Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains of NE Oregon - most beautiful mountains in Oregon IMHO
Steens Mountain in SE Oregon is another idea

Thanks for the suggestion! That one actually flew right over my head. I used to go fishing over at Willowa lake quite a bit.

Hi Christian,
Ditto what Tarol says about the Eagle Cap Wilderness. There's a thread here somewhere detailing some of the options.
You also might look into the Three Sisters Wilderness or Hells Canyon.
Happy trails,
Randy

If you want something different and lots of solitude try Steen's Mountain area. It gets very little use from the roads and virtually none off trail. Interesting in the fact the forest cover is not conifer. Almost a pure aspen forest.
