Just curious about how anti-bacterial metal surfaces like aluminum and titanium really are. I have always been comfortable with rinsing aluminum pots clean with plain water, letting them dry, and then using them again without concern for bacteria.
Is there (hopefully) clinical truth behind my assumption?

I don't know but I've experienced similar - I wash with a bit of moss, sand and water. I haven't used soap to wash my camp pot/dishes in thirty years.

Similar here too...no soap ever. Usually camp-side, hand-scrub my aluminum pot, Ti spork, and Ti fry pan with sand; then go down to the source and rinse with clean water. However, (just to make doubly sure), before cooking anything in either one, usually boil up a little water and slosh it around for a few seconds...good to go.

None. Nada. Zero.
Now being nonporous a metal surface wouldn't stay moist or provide much in the way of shelter for microbes. But it wouldn't actively kill them either. Probably for the best: we share a LOT of DNA with microbes. Anything generally natural like metals that could kill them wouldn't be good for us to eat either.
That's why any medical equipment is thoroughly sterilized (pressurized steam for a set period, chemical treatment either liquid or gas) after each use or discarded.

I've heard silver has anti-microbial properties (don't know this first hand) but nothing about any other metal.

I can't afford to go UL in the fight to keep the microscopic (bacteria-sized) aliens out of my brain, but a good ol' fashioned tin foil hat does offer decent protection at an affordable price.

When I actually cookd when I went camping, I'd ignite the stove and using the pot handles give the insides of the pot a quick burn, when I felt the need.

Silly human, we dine on tin foil hats once we are already inside your head. How'd you come to want to wear the tin foil hats in the first place? We suggested it.

If cleaning your pan by licking it out concerns you, I recommend using your hand or other to carefully smash any remaining bacteria that may be alive. Also, Peeing in your pan can also be used. There is enough ammonia generated to kill off the occasional stray bacteria. This also works for sanitizing water bottles...
