LET'S GET CROCKED--- Here's Monte crossing Kirkland Creek. They also make good backpacking shoes on trails with alot of crossings. Here I am on the South Fork Citico trail. My backpacking buddy Patman crossing Lost Cove Creek in Pisgah National Forest. Amy Willow on her 2015 BMT thruhike using crocs from the Kirkland trail which has 11 crossings so you might as well stay in the crocs all day. And when it's butt cold crocs must be worn for creek crossings so as to keep your all-important boots dry for as long as possible.

Tipiwalter, I can't wear Crocs because I have scrawny feet and I walk right out of them. I can't even walk across a room in them without them falling off. I have tried the smallest size I can jam into lenghtwise, with the same result. No go. That's why I loved the ones with the adjustable strap over the instep.

The Xeroshoes do look good, but if you're worried about banging your toes then they're probably not a good idea. They could still be comfy in other situations, though.
And $60 for 'em? Something that small and minimalist? I can get a titanium mug for less.

It's been years since I brought camp shoes, but my last trip had some big water crossings, so I caved in and brought the Crocs. I understand why they won't work for some people, and I'm always on the lookout for a more packable alternative that might also be more versatile.

I bought some RocSocs not too long ago, mainly for river crossings, but they also double as camp shoes. (Thanks to BadKnees for the suggestion.) they're full coverage so they won't slip off and have a decent sole. they're all mesh, with draining soles so they dry quickly, but seem still sturdy enough to hold up on the trail for a-ways. I think they're intended as boat shoes. I haven't gotten around to weighing my pair, but the website says they're 10ozs.

That was one of the things that turned us from sandals to Crocs in the first place--a little more enclosed, a little warmer (and more protected from skeeters). On that front, my new shoes win. Warmest yet, and with full laces (which I can pull tight or leave loose to allow sliding on) they have the most potential for serious near-camp wandering (or, I suppose, emergency hiking).

I understand folks' desire for some camp shoes but I find them just extra unnecessary weight in almost all cases. I usually hike in hiking shoes or lightweight boots and find the plenty comfortable around camp. If they are wet, a clean, dry pair of socks usually takes care of the problem. I treat my feet right on the trail, regularly airing them out and soaking them and in most cases they seem fine that night. If I have to use heavier boots when going off trail, I still find them pretty comfortable in the evening. On the rare occasions I do use camp shoes, they are usually a pair of Teva sandals.

Jer, I've done without camp shoes. But my feet (which can't handle being barefoot) get real tired of being in the same shoe. And my boots are a PITA to put on when it's 2 a.m. and I need to get out of the tent I admit I also like (this is more on the luxury end) to make stream crossings without wetting my boots and (really on the luxury end) to wear shoes into the lake when I bathe, as my feet are ridiculously tender. Tevas are heavy and not very warm.

Ah, my dear and confused woman - I never stated that my slippers were pink, or fuzzy, or had any semblance to bunny rabbits. I wouldn't be caught dead in such attire. It was a purely hypothetical scenario for the OP.
