I should note that along with the national park having a ban on fires----Cherokee pisgah and nantahala national forests all have fire bans....
Along with the entire route of the AT....
More than likely (I havent researched it to know) other national forests in this general area (like Virginia) have fire bans as well....

Some idiot near my work decided to burn a brush pile yesterday. Did not go well.

We're under extreme drought conditions, so all fires are banned. There are burn marks if all different sizes up and down one of the main stretches of highway around Birmingham. My husband said there's one that's got to be at last a mile long. Not good! I wish we'd get some rain, but I think this drought well be lasting awhile. The winter is looking to be warm and dry. I sure hope the weather forecasters are wrong this time.

There's already several fires burning in the area. Rough Ridge in the Cohutta Wilderness is on fire and expected to burn for several more weeks. Wolf creek NW of Turtletown in the Cherokee has a fire going as well. There's a blaze on Chilohowee mountain in Rattlesnake hollow just north of Parksville lake and HWY 64. There's several in NW Georgia as well. Current closures associated with the Rough Ridge wildfire include: Three Forks Trailhead parking lot, East Cowpen trail from Three Forks parking lot to the junction with Panther Creek trail, and Entire length of Rough Ridge trail from the junction with East Cowpen to Jacks River trail. fannin.fetchyournews.com/2016/10/31/cohutta-wildfire-update-fire-burns-1224-acres/I've been looking at the map, and this fire seems to be confined to the SE corner of the Cohutta wilderness and moving north by northeast. Hopefully the wind won't change and most of the wilderness area will be spared. It's very dry around here.....no fires please!
