Does anyone have details about the backcountry campsite closures in Big Bend due to bear activity? Any anticipated re-opening dates?
Thanks, Steve

Likely no info you haven't seen; higher rains equaled higher nut production in the area, worries about pre-denning territoriality and curiosity for new food smells during this time, reservations for sites have thus far been blocked-out thru end of November.

Crap, that's too bad. How about Big Bend Ranch State Park?

I assume you're familiar with this site? link. Big Bend Ranch sounds great, Toejam just posted a link to an old TR in the Gila in Winter thread in the Mountain States subforum, there is also a great article over on Backpackinglight. I think there is just one week of closure there for a public hunt in Nov. The Guads would also be great, I'd imagine. And November can be a great time for backpacking the Gila. I wonder when they'll reopen the backcountry sites at Big Bend? Amazing that the Black Bear population has recovered to the point that they're having to take such measures.

I assume you're familiar with this site? Yep, that's where I learned of the closures in the first place, but I figured I'd check here as well. I've hiked the Rancherias Trail in BBRSP before so as long as it's not closed for hunting or bear activity, I'll go there. I'd still like another few days of backpacking in the area though, maybe Homer Wilson to the Mule Ears or something like that assuming that Zone Camping is still OK.

By the way, I called the Barton Warnock Center and the Rancherias Trail is open to backpacking even though it is indeed hunting season that week.
