I'll be buying a few pairs of merino hiking socks and was wondering what brand & style do you wear? I was thinking about getting the reg. length kind of socks because I figured when I'm wearing shorts, (and when they're sprayed with permetherin earlier) they'll help keep the ticks away. What style and brand do you get?

Low as I can stand. Since I switched from boots to low cuts, I began using biking wool socks as much as anything. REI Smartwool

Low but still above the shoe as having them ride down is a pain (requires taking the shoe off, etc..) IME anyways.

I do regular length and fold them over the shoe to help keep debris out.

Regular length simply because I'm more used to it.

Crew height. I need them to be designed to go with a mid- to low-height boot. With trail shoes or sneakers, I wear more low-cut socks, though around home I wear whatever, including the sox my boys have rejected for whatever reason.

Low-cut usually, with sneakers or trail shoes. The occasions when I wear boots, I use crew cut or occasionally knee-height when necessary (wearing deep-winter PAC boots), but typically just the low ones.

Low cut if possible - my pups like to breathe. If the trail dictates otherwise, taller socks, gaiters, etc. But my pups like to breathe.
And as thin as I can get. Even the Smartwool ultralight or whatevers seem heavy to me.

Look in the biking section at REI. And as thin as I can get. Even the Smartwool ultralight or whatevers seem heavy to me.

Low-cut or no-show for low shoes, regular for boots. I've worn no-show socks with boots before with no complaints, but I like to keep the sticks and bugs off my ankles.

Light-weight wool/nylon/cotton/whatever, regular-rise for summer hiking. I like the height for covering the space between the top of my hiking shoes and the bottom of my pants.
Medium weight wool knee high for winter day excursions/mild conditions. My boots take care of most of the foot insulation, but I like a good overlap in the transition between the base layer, sock, and boot.
Light-weight wool regular-rise and thick wool knee-high for extended/deep-freeze winter fun. Not unusual to substitute the light innie with a vapour barrier. Lots of inactivity, long distances from easy warmth, or very cold conditions. Need to balance the thickness of the socks with the boot to prevent too much reduction of circulation to the foot.
