I've been looking into picking up a hammock to add to my system. To either be carried in lieu of my tent (assuming the forecast would permit) or to be carried alongside my tent. was wanting to know if anyone carried both while out on the trail ?

I never carry both. I can set up my hammock on the ground, with the aid of stakes and my hiking pole to keep one end up. That allows me to enter and exit the WBBB but I can nearly always find something to hang from. I do carry a couple of wire nuts to aid in attaching to boulders and walls.

I carry a bivy and my hammock occasionally although I most often just carry the hammock. It is usually just shoulder season when I have a strong possibility of snow that I bring the bivy. I almost always carry my tent and a bivy in winter. I use the bivy as backup in case of catastrophic failure during major snow/wind storms. I have only winter camped with my hammock a handful of time.

I was thinking more of setting it up at a campsite where I know I will be spending a few nights, just to have something more comfortable than the tent in case one wanted to sit back and read or just enjoy nature.

If you don't mind the extra weight, that would be a legit luxury. I often bring a DSLR which weighs more than my hammock by a significant amount.

I sleep so much better in my hammock, I would not go to ground again unless I had to. I use a hexagonal tarp for rain cover, and it comes with a zippered net to keep out the bugs.

Well I was looking at the ENO double nest with the slap straps and (from what I could gather online) it would have a combined weight of 32 oz . not sure if other manufactures could get that down. I imagine like anything backpacking related it will depend largely on how much $$$ one is willing to spend.

If you're just wanting something to lounge in, I would definitely not carry a 2# hammock. Get something like a BIAS weight weenie micro with straps and whoopies. or a netless hammock from Dutchware Gear. Lots of options which would not be too pricey and would keep you well under a pound with suspension.

I would definitely not carry a 2# hammock. took me a minute to understand that you were referencing the weight LOL. Do you know how well those options would hold up if they were used in place of a tent? Living and camping in FL gives me the ability to use them almost year round assuming it doesn't rain. Don't have access to many outdoor retailers Dick's sporting goods and Bass Pro Shops have limited variety, that coupled with my lack of knowledge with hammocks (brands / types) is my reason for asking.

Cruise around Hammock Forums for a bit. Watch the videos by shugemery and see what this is all about. You Tube has lots of hammock videos. I highly recommend the WBBB. You can order it online and if it doesn't suit you, it will resell for nearly every penny invested.
Hell, you live so close I will loan you one of mine to test out. You pay shipping both ways, and check it out.

Sorry, I wasn't clear if you were looking for something for hanging around camp or something to sleep in, I gather you're looking for something that will do both. Since you're in FL, I'm guessing you'll want something with a bugnet. WBBB would definitely be a good option, as Zeke says, you can easily resell it if you don't wind up liking it. Another good option might be the Dutchware Halfwit. Zeke is also right that you should spend some time at Hammock Forums and watching Shug videos (I find him annoying, but his videos are extremely informative). Take your time to do your research, if possible, there is a ton to learn, and an overwhelming number of cottage industry hammock makers. You will need a tarp as well, if you ever use it in inclement weather.

I appreciate the gesture, But I think I should invest more time and research into hammocks. however I did notice that Dutchware Gear has what looks to be a generic version of the ENO double nest for $35, might be worth it to just pick it up as it comes with a suspension system. worse case scenario I could use it to lounge at the beach LOL

My original Hennessy Hammock Ultralight Asym weighs 1lb 10oz. That includes bug netting, straps, guy out lines and tarp. I love it.

I believe you will be satisfied with the Dutch. Good stuff made by that fellow. Additionally, i dont' know if you carry a chair or not, but you could drop it and carry the hammock...it is a chair, your bed, etc. Add a solid tarp, perhaps one with doors and you will have a solid set up. Under quilt and you can take it out in all seasons. Give it a try, I love mine hammock set up and use it everywhere I'm allowed to.

i dont' know if you carry a chair or not Nope no chair, that's why I was looking at hammocks. I just feel something to sit down on, other than the floor, would be nice.
