Sadly possible. A device failure or loss, as we know from forum member's experience, does happen. But the prolonged absence alongside the device being silent for so long doesn't give much room for optimism. A simple immobilizing injury AND a device failure from a proven working unit? Odds diminish with time.
Sad.
Given the density of the search tracks I'm still amazed the search hadn't been successful. I wonder if the weather chased him somewhere unexpected?

Given the density of the search tracks I'm still amazed the search hadn't been successful. I wonder if the weather chased him somewhere unexpected? A hiker missing for a year and half in the Superstitions was eventually found on open ground, 67 yards from the TH where he left his motorcycle. He had been the subject of numerous searches. It's more surprising to me that they find as many people as they do. I hope the Bishop Pass hiker is still wandering lost somewhere, but that possibility seems increasingly remote.

But his last activation did give them a better fix on a last known position (Barrett Lakes) than had he not had the unit. He should have stayed there, but apparently he moved on.

My initial speculation was with his apparent experience when weather came in he'd hunker down to ride out the days until travel was better, regardless of "schedule" ( so two days delay didn't seem that worrying) : but that doesn't seem to be the case and when doing a speeded up bailout route. does become tougher to figure out.

The fact that he went so fast he was unable to hit the SOS button should be a comfort.
He was doing what he loved. There are worse ways to go.
