Maybe it is just me, but I find it sad you felt the need to pull a gun and fire it to scare off a non-threatening bear.

Well I hope your day gets better My day is fine. Where was your pistol aimed when you fired it? Don't come to the sierra without extra clips given your fear of bears. If you were in a National Park, carrying a firearm is illegal. You could have pulled out the long lens and gotten a decent photo of the bear rather than the shaky video which shows nothing. Did you really feel you or your wife's lives were in danger? Black bears are benign. Wave your arms and yell at them and they will run away. Unless they have your food.

Fair enough. I still think it was an over reaction.
edit: jumping up and down was probably not the best thing to to do. Makes you look like prey.

So I didn't necessarily feel like our lives were in danger, but we were 4 miles into our overnight backpacking trip and I wasn't leaving the woods on the account that she was afraid we were being stalked, simple as that. Maybe backpacking isn't your thing.

My wife was the one who was terrified, which was why I wanted to show her it was actually scared of us.(even though it wasn't at all)
The reason your wife was terrified is because people like you have wound her up about all the frightening stuff that might happen to her in the woods, shame on you.

killed by a wolf IN Front of him I've been biting my tongue, but can't stand it anymore. A single wolf attacking a dawg while a human is present? Seems like you are stretching things.

First time i saw an American bear in the wild was in Yosemite, some bushes about 50 yards ahead of me started shaking so i just stopped and watched till this bears head appeared feeding on the bush, after a few moments it sniffed my presence and stood up then ducked behind a tree and played peek a boo for a while before wandering of, a really nice memory for me and the kind of experience you denied your wife, and replaced with fear and negativity.

It takes someone special to play grab ass in the middle of the woods with a bear.[/quote jelko, your responses are reasonable. I think you have an irrational fear of wildlife. Checking out a bear in the wild is not playing grab ass. It is just observing creatures in their native environment. Me, I have no fear of black bears. Grizzlies scare the crap out of me. But in Alaska and Montana I only carried bear spray. I've never carried a gun in the wilderness. If you would not have not had that gun, what would you have done?

And THAT is why people shouldn't carry guns. Because we live in a society full of scared people, afraid of everything. Their only security is to "get the gun".
Pathetic.

jelko has vanished, do you think we scared him off? I think he expected a lot of sympathy and support for him and his wife, not the bear. If I recall, that was his first post?? Maybe he was in fact just looking for support but didn't find it. I personally found his position unsettling and too reactionary, and the video practically useless. It was of such poor quality I couldn't even see the alleged bear.

Someone should sell "bear insurance".
