I do plan to visit a brick and mortar store to torture some poor shoee salesman eventually, but can anyone recommend an over-ankle style boot? If not a specific model, then maybe just a brand? Ankle support does not come from having material above the ankle. That is hype, not reality. There are boots that have lateral support which do truly support the ankle. However, you will have to learn to walk all over again most likely if you go that route as they are much more rigid. As mentioned, a podiatrist will tell you what type of footwear/insole you should use for your particular case. There are many wives tales, rumors, and lore in backpacking. Over the years, I have found much of it to be false in regards to gear/clothing. Be cautious and question everything.

Out of curiosity, what's the absolute longest anyone has been able to keep to the same pair of hiking shoes/boots? I aspire to set some record of miles in a pair of shoes some day lol

218 days hiking in the same boot averaging about 14 miles a day. 3052 miles, but not documented well enough for me to feel comfortable hyping it as my best. Somewhere in the upper 2800-3000.

Out of curiosity, what's the absolute longest anyone has been able to keep to the same pair of hiking shoes/boots? I had a pair of Asolo Parallel GTX Globaline series boots. They were mountaineering boots weighing at nearly six pounds a piece. They lasted nearly ten years with over 150 days per year of tromping for at least three of those years and close to that for much of the other seven years. I was tempted to get them resoled and probably should have. They were incredibly comfortable although heavy. In the type of terrain I love, they worked great as they kept me from rolling my ankle on steep slopes/rocky terrain/etc.

My former boss is an avid backpacker and has a pair of Vasque Breeze boots and loves them. I think he said he's on his second pair.
