Also, if you really want to pamper yourself on the way back to Kansas, you may want to stop hereWow. I never would have suspected a place like that in Stratton. Closer to Denver, a cheaper option. We stayed there years ago when it was the Bugs Bunny Motel. I guess Warner Bros took offense at having their trademark on such a property.

There are lots of interesting motels signs along Colfax, along with other interesting things...... It's similar to the old Route 66 in New Mexico.

We do need to know your feelings on: beer scotch beets bacon okra Brussels sprouts kilts Let's see. Hate beer, unless it's fruit beer like Crispin pear or apple. LOVE Crispin pear or the Ace Perry. Scotch? I don't think I've ever had it, unless it was in a cocktail. Beets? Never tried! Bacon? Who DOESN'T love bacon?! Okra..? Never had it. Brussels Sprouts? LOVE them, sauteed in garlic butter, mmmm. Kilts? Hey, whatever floats your boat. As for New Hampshire, grew up there and have a genetic disposition for the Red Sox. Oh? Where abouts? I grew up in Deering/Hillsboro, NH. Thanks everyone for such a warm welcome! My sister in law and I are planning a trip to CO toward the end of October. I want to go old school and just find a nice spot to set up a tent in a national park.. she's afraid it'll snow. What do you all think? Cabins are hard to find, and pricey. Do you think it's worth the risk that it might snow on us?

She is right. I-70 was closed for winter conditions and accidents earlier this week. You can probably find a dry spot, but you need to be prepared for some serious cold and snow. I live in the Denver metro.

Also, you will be hiking during hunting season. You may want to get a couple orange vests.
Of course, hunting is not allowed in RMNP. It's also not allowed in Great Sand Dunes National Park, which is a bit further south. It will still be chilly at night, but if it does snow, it probably won't be as deep.

Welcome from the Big Sky Country. Kansas may be boring but my experience has been it has some of the friendliest and most decent people in the country. Maybe boring is good after all.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Oh, great idea! I love GSNP. But bring warm woolies, and watch the forecasts for driving conditions.
