Did ya'll hear about that guy who charges $7 a mile to be a hiking partner for people? Apparently he makes a lot of money doing that. It never occurred to me that people would pay for that. What do ya'll think about it? Have we been doing it wrong all this time by not having people pay us? Lol

I actually prefer to be alone, and if I'm going with someone, it'll be someone I know very well and actually like their company and can trust they won't ruin the experience.

If it is who I think it is, it is some guy (Doyle?) that does van supported hikes on the AT. I'd rather be dead than take one of his trips. Fer goodness sakes, the AT is the most heavily traveled trail in the US and is blazed the whole way. What kind of moron would need to be guided on that trail?
But, it works for him and his clients, so I don't really care. I'd never hike that trail anyway.

It showed him walking with them along busy streets, neighborhoods, trails, etc. I was in shock that people would pay someone to walk with them! There are so many meet up groups and places to find other hikers for free! On a different note, I'm curious why you would never do the AT trail? I've been trying to decide which one I should do first when the time came, whether to do the AT, the CT, or the PC Trail.

Given your list the CT or section hiking the PCT would be on my list.

As a post note, maybe look at the JMT, although it is also a heavily traveled route. Maybe just look at hiking from Red's Meadow to Tuolumne. Good times.

One of my few regrets in life is that, as a college professor with flexible time in the summer (not "summers off," but that's a different rant), I should have made an investment in mountain property years ago when I was younger, and run a seasonal guide service to help offset the investment. It would have been an awesome way to make a couple bucks while building some equity in a possible retirement property.
I'm sure it's a tiny niche market, but there are some people willing to pay someone to provide some gear, drive them to the trailhead, and help them tell their ass from a hole in the ground in the backcountry. One could mule gear in to a basecamp for "luxury" backcountry camping, etc.
I'm now well past the age when I could count on being physically up to it, and where I'd be sufficiently inclined to bend my will to a client's whims.

I would pay some people $7 a mile to leave me alone. Probably a whole lot more.

Do the JMT, CT, PCT - stick in Wonderland Trail somewhere in the mix. The AT for the most part is a green tunnel. It is more of a social thing than being a part of nature. Well, unless you do it in 45 days. That new record had him averaging 47 miles a day. Almost a double marathon a day.
I enjoy having others along -- I'd be a cheap date. But $70 a day is ok if somebody was a guide with a personality, managed/cooked the meals, knew botany or geology or history of the area and had something to say or share.

Sorry, you don't make the nuisance list. I'll try harder. But you seem like a nice person. This is gonna take some work. You live in Twoscon? Getting ready to go gas up the car.

BigLoad just wishes he lived in Tucson. Yes, the debate continues. It's hard to outweigh Mrs. big_load's Phoenix clan.

Well, I'm actually still at home in lovely SoCal, but thought it would be fun to bug you. I'm working on my nuisance factor until you give me my money.
