My next pair of progressives are going to be transitions lenses, which will eliminate the need to extra sunglasses in most circumstances. I tried that on the pair I replaced last year, and I was disappointed. They don't get as dark as my dedicated sunglasses, which was suboptimal, but tolerable. Ditto for the lack of complete wraparound that allowed in too much light from the periphery. The real deal-killer was how slowly they lightened up again upon going indoors. My wife felt the same way about hers. Maybe they'll get better someday. I don't like having to carry two pairs of glasses everywhere I go.

My eye doctor said that the ones they can get now are a lot better at adjusting more quickly. Dunno. I guess I'll just have to try them and see. I have never imagined that they'd be sufficient for extensive snow/ice travel, because of the lack of wrap-around. (The 90-year-old dork glasses are really quite ideal for that.)

Eldest Son has transition lenses in his glasses. They seem to darken pretty well, and adjust back and forth quite quickly--I was surprised and impressed, as they have improved over the early versions. But I do worry about the lack of wrap-around coverage, and how much glare will get in from below when on granite or snow. Still, it's the best solution for him, as keeping track of a second pair, even clip-ons, would be a recipe for disaster.

Watching TV in a reclining position can also be a challenge. When I try that, my eyes tend to be closed

Different types of lenses and labs can lead to progressives with a smaller or larger sweet spot, so you might want to take your Vision Works lenses to another shop to see if they think they can give you a bigger usable field of vision in the same sized lens. That is news to me and I think well worth checking into in my opinion. Thanks! My next pair of progressives are going to be transitions lenses, which will eliminate the need to extra sunglasses in most circumstances. My prescription now is replacing transition lens. My complaint about transitions is that they are UV activated and most car windows have some degree of UV block which means my transitions didn't work while driving. Other than that my eyes still felt better with dedicated sunglasses that were polarized. I ordered a pair of bifocals with a 35mm wide reading lens and had them set low so I won't have to break my neck to see my steps while hiking. We'll see. I'm about to be back in the most beautiful country of my life, I want to see it, all of it.

I love my progressives. I have an acute astigmatism (football shaped eye) and have to have the best glass, though, and I did not get that at one of the cheaper places. Went to a better eye care place, and they gave me the same prescription, but in better glass and that made a total difference. (I enjoyed meeting you, and Jennifer, at Pickle Gulch) mtngrl = Kathy)
