I feel sorry for you if you don't find images of the Tetons an impressive thing. Sounds very jaded!
Most places I backpack aren't nearly as impressive as they are, but still manage to have a fantastic time.

It's not the place so much as it is the season. The "iconic" hikes have high use and off-seasons.
Not sure what you really want since it seems you seek best of the best.
Pick your best off the best. Forget the rest. Plan your trek off-season.
Here's an example. One of my best treks was 100+ miles plus in Yellowstone beginning two weeks after Labor Day. High levels of wildlife sightings and migration movement, change of seasons, fall colors, snow dusted peaks and first snowstorm. Eight of my 12 hiking days were free from contact with another human.

I think Chuck needs a hug. Or a colostomy.
Westy,
Great post. These kind of trips are likely behind me but boy do I cherish my memories in the Absaroka. Just an FYI the Maple and Berry Fires are probably going to smoke on until after Halloween but maybe it will be like 2005 and we get hammered the first week of October with 2-5' of snow. We are pretty smoke free south of Mt. St. John though.

Try the loop from the Trail Lake TH in the Winds, up to the summit of Gannett Pk and then back north to your car via the Continental Divide. It's the only USGS quad map (Down's Mountain 7.5') in the lower 48 States that says "No roads or trails", if you really want the best of the best. No crowds , actually nobody at all, once you leave Gannett Pk, no permits needed and the best scenery in the lower 48.

I did Gannett a little over 25 years ago, and I agree that it's a fantastic area.

I would second the Winds and the Sawtooths but also place a big vote for the Beartooths. All have great 5 day trips - but you open up a lot more access by stretching to five days and not three days. Here is a photo link to various trips I have made over the years. Be sure to click on "Show More" in the bottom right-hand corner to see additional galleries. staggsl.zenfolio.com

I just can't find any pictures online that really impress me of Teton. I always Google new areas I'm looking at. If I find few hits or pictures, I start to get excited. If I find many pages of information on a particular locale, I search elsewhere.
