Long, long time coming. Several decades ago there was a movement for a Great North Woods National Park. Have signed up for their newsletters regarding plans for the KWWNM. Like to see some multi-day x-country specific ski trails on abandoned logging roads. Thank you President Obama, please make Bears Ears NM you next executive order!

Regrettably, I've never been to Maine. But I'm glad to see another part of it preserved for the future.

Ha. Seems the Governor is not pleased. "That’s one way to get out of paying taxes to the state of Maine,” LePage said in a statement on Tuesday. “It’s also an ego play for Roxanne Quimby and Sen. Angus King. It’s sad that rich, out-of-state liberals can team up with President Obama to force a national monument on rural Mainers who do not want it. As I’ve said all along, the fix is in.”"
Otoh as a devout Republican I'd have thought he'd applaud people seeking to not pay taxes?
As to the monument itself has there been any explanation as to why she didn't simply add to Baxter State Park? The land appears to be contiguous so I'd have thought that a natural route.

Interesting that the major opponents are from the conservative side. Typically they are supporters of private property rights. Who's to say someone can't gift their property to the Nation?

Well, for me, this is not about the Obama Administration, or any other administration, it's about one person that had the drive to put up her resources to acquire this land and donate it. She wanted it to be a National Park (an idea I'm not in favor of), but compromised with a National Monument. GOOD FOR HER. May her tribe increase...
Travis, you owe it to yourself to see the state of Maine... truly one of the finest treasures in the lower 48.

We are hoping to travel to and spend an extended amount of time exploring all that New England has to offer. That will undoubtedly include this new National Monument. We also hope to get up into the eastern provinces of Canada, especially Newfoundland.
I saw this on my FB feed, but thanks Brad for including it here.

A description: www.nationalparkstraveler.com/2016/08/promising-future-katahdin-woods-and-waters-national-monumentGros Morne is spectacular but the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia isn't to be missed either. Also L'Anse Aux Meadows if you're into that sort of thing. ETA: National Park status I believe has to be conveyed by Congress. Unilateral presidential authority only extends to designating national monuments via the Antiquities Act of 1906, (Pub.L. 59–209, 34 Stat. 225, 16 U.S.C. § 431–433).

Hadn't seen anything here about Roxanne Quimby's remarkable land gifts I'd read about it somewhere recently, but hadn't heard that it finally went through. Thanks for posting the links.

As a backpacker, it is great news. But reading into it, it sure seems messy on the local level.

As a backpacker, it is great news. But reading into it, it sure seems messy on the local level. I'm writing this looking out over Teton National Park, a park whose inception was also "messy on the local level." Not everything best for the whole is ideal for the individual.
