Those are great pics, btw. I believe I stayed at that Chapel spot one very cold early October day 10 years ago.

At Pictured Rocks, do you think it's better (more scenic, other possible factors) to hike the shoreline stretch between Chapel and Mosquito in the morning or in the afternoon?
I will likely camp at one of those, the question being whether I do so before or after hiking that scenic stretch.

I'm probably not a good judge at this because I've always hiked that stretch in the morning since I've always camped at Chapel Beach. But I will say that the sun light bouncing off the cliffs in the morning makes for really nice pictures.

Works for me!
Hike to Chapel and set up camp, explore shoreline eastward in the afternoon (as far as the Coves, maybe), then proceed on the loop around Mosquito the next morning.

Now that is a nice leisurely hike you soon won't forget. Bring back pictures to compare

I think the sites at Chapel are much nicer than at Mosquito. Chapel is more spread out and open.
You can plan to arrive at a Chapel first, grab your preferred site, and then head west to Mosquito sans pack. It's probably only a few miles west to spray falls too, but there is a tricky sandstone bluff to surmount just east of Chapel Creek.

Heading west to mosquito will be the start of the next morning's hike to complete the loop counter-clockwise, so I'll stroll eastward day one after setting up camp at Chapel. I look forward to the tricky sandstone bluff.

If you can score a night at Trout Bay on Grand Island, do it. Would you recommend a particular campsite on Trout Bay over the others? Driftwood is the most convenient, since it is in the direction of my counter-clockwise loop around the island. Little Duck is the next closest, but being at the end of a road might make it crowded. Little Dunes I & II require an extra hike with backtracking, which I'd be willing to do for a better camping experience. However, I'm a hammock camper so I need appropriate trees.

I agree the sites are much nicer at Chapel Beach but the evening light at Mosquito is really nice.

I cannot recommend a specific site at Trout Bay as I have not overnight end there. I just remember it being a beautiful spot.

Also, take some time for a swim at Mosquito off the big stone block on the point. The large flat spot east of there seemed like a good place to hike to and take the kiddos to wade when I hit it up about 5 years back, but it was closer to knee/thigh deep a few years later. Not sure if this was tidal or thanks to the few years of hard winter freezes before I was there last. Can anyone shed some light? The campground at Hurricane Beach is nice also but a lot busier for some reason. I picked Hurricane as a spot to take the kids when they reach an certain age last time I was out. It had: immediate adjacency to the road (important for abandoning camp to go have pizza at Lake Superior Brewing in not far away Grand Marais), a decent beach, close proximity to several shipwrecks and Au Sable Lighthouse via a level walk on a two-track access road or a fun rock hopping hike in the lake, and what I thought was a doable 6.8 out and back to Log Slide. My 2c, but I thought it had a lot going for it and I can see why it would fill up.

I thought it had a lot going for it. You make some good points. More often than not I think like a backpacker not a car camper with kids.

BTW, I may make myself the odd man out here, but as it inspired me to get to posting in Central. ;-) 1) Maah Daah Hey- yeah I know I was often sharing it with mountain bikers, but loved it. 2) TRNP, Talkington/Paddock Creek- I have a thing with hiking near bison and this gave me my fill along with some deep creek crossings and some great scenery with or without the wildflowers blooming in places 3) Custer SP into Black Elk Wilderness- what was the loop, Sylvan Lake to Harney/Black Elk Peak, down to Bear something or other, Centennial, then back via Cathedral Spires, Little Devils Tower, to Sylvan? I'll have to look it up again. Though the blight has really messed it over in places I liked the scenery that I can remember, the drive in and out was also fun, and the food at the lodge was pretty good after I got cleaned up at the end of a few days out 4) Badlands NP Stronhold/Cuny Table area- no real trail but what looked to be plenty of possible animal/human routes to meander on last time I was there 5) Pictured Rocks for sure

I had never heard of this so I googled it. Sounds really nice actually. Have you hiked this trail? If you have how crowded is it and is water a problem?
