There are a lot of minds to be picked here. Eventually you'll distill all of that advice down to something that works for you. Go out camping with some individuals here and you may be distilling a lot more than advice ;-) Welcome from sunny Canada!

Annapolis? I can kayak to there from here. Gettysburg is a bit farther away... Technically, Crownsville. But no one knows where that is! I miss it (and my kayaks) every day. Save

Heck yeah I know where Crownsville is! Ya know the little white church at the intersection? Got married there. Used to be a tiny little church. Now we've got a (slightly) bigger one next to it.
There are at least two places here where you can rent kayaks. Jes sayin'...

Have you done much in Patapsco or Gunpowder? Yes I have done Patapsco many times. A fall hike with all the colors changing in Patapsco is great!

I usually take that week over Christmas, so I may hike the AT in Maryland/ Virginia I've been thinking about trying to do a HAM during a long winter weekend. Only thing I wonder about is whether the springs are frozen. We don't get much snow most of the time in MD, but it can get chilly.

Greetings pilgrim. I haven't seen much of Maryland, but the upper Youghiogheny River was one of the best kayaking experiences I've had. The mountains and forest were beautiful. You've fallen into a good crowd. I have a lot of reasons to visit Maryland again some day, but chief among them would be to hike and eat and drink with my friends on this forum that live there. How do you feel about hiking in kilts and the proper preparation of Brussel sprouts? I must admit that I feel a little odd about being the first one in the forum to uphold the ancient tradition of hazing the new guy with silly questions that could effect your group standing for years to come. Welcome to the forum, see ya on the trail.

I forgot how to use the quote function. Actually I don't see the quote button on the screen.
Kilts....not for me, but they might be cooler on hot days Brussels Sprouts: Lightly boiled, smothered in butter

If you haven't got quoting down yet catonsvillebill try highlighting a section of text in someone's post, a "quick quote" button should pop up. Click it and then check the "quick reply" box at the bottom. Text should be there with code applied. As I am stil not sure how to in the main reply function box someone else will likely chime-in and inform us both.
BTW welcome from Chicagoland. Not much worth hiking right here, but plenty within reach.
