My original post may have been posted in the wrong area, so sorry...... Ok so I know I could just as easily Google this, but I would much prefer to ask you lovely people instead. I would like to take a weekend (2.5 days, 2 nights) backpacking trip in my new habitat. I don't really know much about hiking in Oregon or places to go yet. I'm just dying to get out in the woods. This move has completely zapped our summer. Could someone tell me of a good trail near Portland that is maybe a 20 mile loop or hike in and out? When would be the best time to go? And links to info please? Thank you!!

Any idea on the elevation gain and loss you can handle?

I've done 10,000 before in the Sawtooths in Idaho. Steep climbs are a bit hard for me, but gradual gain/loss I can do.

Not really up on all the options, so waiting for a local to chime in, but figured there was a piece of info missing as I've been on easy hikes and steep ascents alike in the area.

Eagle creek is a good place to start. Waterfalls, well worn path, etc... Maybe a bit crowded on weekends. Or' you could go up to Mt Hood and circle clockwise from the lodge on the Timberline trail until you get to Paradise Park. Both are out and backs.
Lots of national forest if you want to stay off the beaten path. tigger is well familiar with most of what is up near Hood.
North Fork of the Salmonberry river is a nice trip. Closer to the coast.

Buy (visit Powells downtown) this book for starters. There is a larger volume that covers all of Oregon and Washington, called Pacific Northwest Hiking

hippiebutterfly I lived in Salem, Or for nearly 20 years, and worked in Portland for many of those. I know a little something about that area.

Maybe a bit crowded on weekends Personally, I'd leave Eagle Creek alone until two things happen at the same time: (1) it's not a weekend and (2) it's raining. I'm completely serious about the rain. Eagle Creek is 1000 times prettier when it's in its rainforest glory. On a sunny day it's contrasty and ugly by comparison. I also don't recommend camping there if you can help it. Never seen a greater concentration of TP flowers.

I can give you general advice but I'm not a trail hiker so specific trail advice is best left to others. I'll be planning a few hikes to take place over the next several months if you're interested. They'll be off-trail, relatively exciting, moderately risky, and in that neighborhood of length although a bit shorter due to the speed of off-trail travel.

www.oregonhikers.orgwww.nwhikers.netParadise is a good option, any place with views will be crowded at least during the day. With the increasing population I can not find places to park in the Gorge, and it is a smash and grab place so don't leave stuff in your car. The other way on the TL / PCT trail is less crowded some camping just before Meadows ski area
