I'm still fairly new to hiking and getting my body in okay shape. I'd like to hike Mt. Mitchell and am looking for some trails to prepare me for it.
I've done Table Rock a couple of times now. Any other suggestions that are between the difficulty of Table Rock and Mt. Mitchell that you'd recommend? Preferably between SC upstate and Pisgah area?

When you say "hike mt mitchell" what route do you mean? Like from Black mtn campground or carolina hemlocks all the way up?

Black Mountain campground was the plan. Do you suggest the other route?

Black Mountain campground was the plan. Do you suggest the other route? If thats your route, go for it, I was just curious in order to advise you of some training routes. Its a pretty henious climb. Right out of the campground, its pretty much just switchbacks for what seems like forever. Even after the switchbacks, its an endless slog uphill and never lets up until you get to the top. My wife and I attempted it many years ago, but were not fit enough to complete it, and had to turn back at the old telephone lines. A few years ago, we went back and hiked down commissary ridge almost to where we stopped and then back up. I don't know of another climb near upstate South Carolina that would be good training, but I'd suggest a rigorous cycling regime. It is a thigh burner, and that's the best training I've found for those sorts of hikes. For hikes, maybe try a few of the rim trails at caesars head.

I was definitely planning on doing some of the Caesar Head trails sooner than later. Maybe do the full circle of Table Rock to Pinnacle and back down. If you think of anything else, let me know.

Table Rock to Sassafras Mtn, Rim of the Gap, Pinnacle Pass from Jones Gap to Caesars Head. Can't compare those to your route on Mt Mitchell as I've only done a short route on the mtn.
