I just bought a titanium spork randomly on Amazon because of reasonable price and my favor to the logo. It is lightweight, but how do I tell if it really is titanium?

Titanium has a very distinct feel and texture. A little grippy with gradings, unlike steel or aluminum which both come out smooth, generally. It will also be non-magnetic and if you sand a section of it, the exposed section should be darker than aluminum. You can also anodize it by applying a damp paper towel to it with a battery on the other size (9V should do it). Generally though, it's pretty obvious just by look and feel.

If you're feeling really fancy you can find its specific weight... Weight/Volume of water displaced. Should come out to 4.5 ish.

Apply a torch to it. Titanium will turn lovely iridescent shades of blue and red. It will keep the color. Alternatively, you could determine its mass by placing it in water in a properly graduated vessel and then comparing its weight by mass.

Walk into REI and pick up a titanium spoon, and then an aluminum spoon.

I did the Zeke suggested test on my Backpackinglight long spoon because it looks and feel like stainless steel. Beware that the colour will remain but you get a personalised spork.. I'll post a photo if Photobucket works again for me... It can be seen towards the bottom of this page : www.traildesigns.com/about/gallery13on the left inside a GSI mug

What will you do if it isn't titanium? Can you still use it to eat?

Put it in your left pants pocket, fork side down. Hike 500 miles. If it wears a hole in your pocket, it's titanium.

If it costs a minimum of three times the same item to the left and right of it, it's titanium.

If it's for sale on ebay, it's definitely titanium.

If you don't bother to drill it out, it's most likely titanium...or your mattress.

If it's light enough and strong enough, what does it really matter what the material is anyway? I prefer plastic personally...Lighter cheaper and easy to replace.

Invites to the annual Titanium party, special shiny buttons, and the obvious Lighter than air but more expensive than water...smart water that is.

I think I have a platinum credit card. Or maybe gold or something. Whatever it is, the bank tells me it's really cool. Nothing else matters.
I also have a plastic spoon with a long handle. It works quite well. Again, nothing else matters (but much more seriously this time).
