I'm planning to hike from I-40 to Hot Springs, NC towards the end of August. My itinerary is to leave a vehicle at Standing Bear Hostel and stay at Groundhog Creek Shelter, Roaring Fork Shelter and tent camp near Garenflo Gap. Are any of these locations bothered by bears? Last year, I met a resident who lives near this section who said he feeds bears on his property so I'm wondering if they now associate people with food. Is the trail overly crowded this year like the ATC warned it would be after the Walk in the Woods movie? Any other information or comments would be appreciated!

No first hand knowledge of that section. However there has been shelters closed due to bear activities in gsmnp. Be bear aware and you should be fine. Hang anything that a bear might want to eat...meds food trash lotions toothpaste. Don't eat in your tent. Don't wear your day clothes that might smell of food in your tent. In most cases black bears in this area will run at the first sight or sound of people. If you must make the bear flee yelling and clapping works most of the time. If it is very hungry and smells food. Rock throwing works well. If that does not work it is a sick bear or someone's "pet". Enjoy your hike.

Thanks for the Whiteblaze.net reference; I'd forgotten about it. Lots of good information there for section hikers. Just for background about me, I've hiked about 700+ miles of the AT over 35 years from Georgia to Pennsylvania. I'm filling in a few gaps, like this upcoming section, before doing Pennsylvania to Maine in one push a few years from now.
