VAN --I don't remember if it was me or not, but I certainly recommend the series (though she definitely gets darker as the series goes on). And thanks for calling my attention to this thread. I would second a lot of the books listed (and will go in search of some of the others that I haven't read), and will add books by Craig Childs, especially The Secret Knowledge of Water. He's all about the Four Corners area/Colorado Plateau and Anasazi history, and has a lovely writing style. On a different side of it all, while building the library, don't forget cookbooks...I've gotten some good stuff from the Lip Smackin' Backpacking cookbooks, but my go-to sources are Sarbar's Freezer Bag Cooking: Trail Food Made Simple and Dicentra's One Pan Wonders books, which I just got this summer and have already marked up all over the place (and they've given us some new favorite recipes). I have other books I've used in the past, but they all steer you toward more actual cooking on the trail, as do many of the recipes in the Lip Smackin' books (something I think may be more necessary for longer hikes, for efficiency? Not sure). Ive shifted pretty much completely to the "add boiling water" school of trail cooking

Just FYI... the authorities tend to frown upon the building libraries in the backcountry.

One of my favorites is Listening for Coyote by William Sullivan. He makes a solo backpack trip to explore a new route from the western most point of Oregon, Cape Blanco, to the northeast corner of the state and Hells Canyon. His trip takes him mostly through wilderness areas where he enounters some strange characters and has a close encounter with death when foraging. Highly recommend it.
