I sure will. As a fellow newbie in my area, what are some of the things you are changing after first trip?

Things to change: 1. Go lighter (somehow)! My total weight was 21 lbs, which I was really proud of first trip, but it was still a challenge. 2. Buy a smaller food vault and choose lighter foods. 3. Switch from Starbucks instant coffee to black tea. By the 4th cup of instant, I was sick of it. 4. Have a plan B hiking route. We got cut off by flooding and it grounded the trip, but it was still a full one. 5. Don't bother with dryer lint (fire starter). It's over-rated. 6. Make sure the tent fly is taut to keep out rain better.
Items that were invaluable: 1. Moleskin (stopped potential blisters) 2. Ibuprofen 3. IcyHot (applied to feet and neck/shoulders before bed) 4. Pericord 5. Walking sticks (my trekking poles arrived from Amazon the day we left) 6. 1/2 Dove soap bar (washed my body, hair, and whole outfit of clothes by hand) 7. Bungee cords 8. Tarp 9. Vick's Vapo Rub (applied to feet and ankles, before setting out, to deter ticks - didn't have one) 10. Little pill baggies found in the pharmacy. (Labeled and separated all my pills/lotions with minimal weight) 11. A large black trash bag. Cinched my entire backpack in it the night it stormed and was able to prop it outside against a tree (tent is so small), and it stayed completely dry.

Thanks for the reply. What sort of food did you pack? I'll b taking mountain house freeze dried, some granola bars, jerky, maybe a snikers.
Never heard of the vapor rub thing, definitely gonna try that out.
What did u use bungee cords for? My tent came with a decent rain fly, so tarp might not be needed 4 me.
When on OT website, they mentioned shuttles. Did u use this service?

We packed instant oatmeal (w/protein), Cliff bars, pop tarts, trail mix, ramen, beef jerky, and dried fruit. We also bought peanut MM;s for the trail, but they didn't last the road trip. Lol! The bungee cords we used to secure the tarp, and also as a makeshift clothesline for the clothes I rinsed out. I read about the shuttle but didn't have time to look into it. Our friends were gracious enough to shuttle us Can't wait to hear all about your trip!

I'll b taking mountain house freeze dried, some granola bars, jerky, maybe a snikers. To each their own but I've been backpacking for almost 10 years now and I think I've done mountain house or similar meals maybe once. They are just so expensive. Cost just about as much as going out to eat. Check out the Camp Cooking and Trail Snacks discussions.

For what it's worth my appetite on the trail drops to almost nothing for some reason.
Breakfast: instant oat meal or granola with powdered milk, some kind of dried fruit.
Lunch: just snacks... crackers, granola bars, chips, etc.etc.. I rarely eat a big lunch
Super: instant potatoes, knorr noodles of some kind, dried refrined beans on a tortilla shell with taco seasoning and slices of a small onion that I bring.
Lot's people take candy bars and sweets but I stay away from them on the trial. High doses of surgar really takes a hit on your immune system and although it's never happened I'm paranoid about getting sick in the back country.

For what it's worth my appetite on the trail drops to almost nothing for some reason. Glad to read this...I experienced this and couldn't understand why. I knew I was burning crazy calories, but my body shunned food. But, when we got back to civilization...Oh, my! I ate everything within reach. One extreme to the other.
