Longhorns, Aggies, or Wildcats? Careful, now, you're wandering into dangerous territory.... I think that looks like a great list. As you use it and gain experience, you will figure out which items you like and which you don't, but this is a great place to start. You have clearly done your homework and are well-prepared, I think y'all are going to have a great time.

thanks bjaye!! I love the outdoors. Want to experience as much as I can in nature. I have gone on small local hikes but nothing very long. I live near South Bend, IN. Im looking at some trails in Michigan. Looks like you have some good plans in place.

I found a book at my local library last year that inspired my desire to hike, "Grandma Gatewood's Walk". She completed her first thru-hike of the AT at age 67. I won't spoil it (in case you decide to read it), but she started a trail in Ohio. I can't remember the name of it, but Indiana is next door to Ohio. Just thought you might like to check it out. I am at some point. Michigan and Ohio are beautiful country.

Yes I am a reader. I will look for the book. Thanks for the suggestion. Michigan has some great trails. I will have to consider Ohio too! Especially if I read the book

Welcome to both newbies from a former Midwesterner (Chicago, Northern Wisconsin) and now Texan. The forum is a great place for ideas and information. I started backpacking late in life and have gotten a lot of help from everyone here.

It can be difficult to do, but if you buy good equipment up front you save the additional expense of buying more equipment later and selling the old stuff at a loss. I say it can be difficult because when you start you don't really know what type/size tent you want, and the same goes for cooking systems, sleeping bags, etc. But it pays to buy quality when you can. For sleeping bags, down rules. Of course, then there's the question of hammocks...

Of course, then there's the question of hammocks... Nope. Nada. no way. Need at least a little, tiny barrier between me and nature. Even for purely psychological reasons.
