I got a lot of my gear for several activities (backpacking, biking, kayaking, skiing) by buying and selling them on Craigslist, trying to trade up with each sale. In the end I came out ahead, meaning that some of my major purchases were free. I was able to get things I would not have been able to afford otherwise.

You can check out a sellers eBay history and ask questions too before swearing them off. Some stores also post new items on eBay.
That said if going lightweight in the summer, one doesn't need a whole lot of serious gear in most of the lower 48.

I've actually found about 90% of all my hiking clothing (minus the boots) at Saver's. (A local thrift store here that benefits the ARC.) I've found pants, under armour, waterproof jacket, shirts....I always look for those things. I know that's not gear, but a helpful hint if you are wanting some clothing items.

In Boise there is a used Camping Equipment store, where they take gear to sell on consignment, where used gear can be inspected. What happened to that place?

Iron Eagle Drive, Suite 106 on the corner of State St/Hwy 44 and Edgewood; located next to Mountain West Bank and Chicago Connection Pizza. The phone number for the 2nd store is 208-957-5425

That's actually a great idea! Particularly for stuff which might get damaged on the trip and not worn outside of backpacking once or twice a year.

I've actually found about 90% of all my hiking clothing (minus the boots) at Saver's. Success at this can really vary depending on where you are. I can't find much worthwhile in thrift shops around here, because no one hikes. Actually, also because people around here aren't very well-off. For good stuff, I need to go south to the Silicon Valley where rich people ditch good stuff more often, but thrift shops work best if you can drop in often and just check.

Thrift shops, second-hand stores and pawn shops are great locales for gear when they are in college towns. Too many overly optimistic, enthusiatic and unrealistic students get sucked into the idea of outdoor adventure, buy all the fancy gear they want and then find out the reality of the cost of college, both time wise and money wise. Often they have to unload their gear to make ends meet. Maybe that sounds like taking advantage of people's misfortune but I don't have much sympathy for people who spend more than they have rather than concentrating on the essentials like tuition.

I did write 'used to be' but when I stopped by about 3 months ago, at the Capitol location, they were still in business. The Capitol location is next to the Boise libaray.

Not for all gear but, if you know exactly what model you want in high-end gear, and use PayPal for payment, then eBay can work in your favor - save you a good chunk of coin too.
Agree with above, realizing that many first-timers jump right into backpacking with both feet - buy the best and use it but once only...sits...ripe for the picking!
While I wouldn't buy a used stoves, boots, pads, (toothbrush?), or off-brand anything - but some name-brand items - like WM bags, Gregory backpacks, and even some of the more expensive tents, (if you know what to look for/what questions to ask), and can document all for Paypal (if not exactly as advertised, you get your money back)...good (not great) deals can often be found.
