Hey all, Some of the old timers might remember me from way back. I hadn't been active on the BP forums for several years (okay, maybe more like 5. Or more...), but recently went to the Backpacker webpage in search of the forums... and found they were gone. A quick Google search turned up these boards and lots of familiar names. I looked through the posts from right after the move, but none seem to explain what happened that caused the forums to move. And are these independent forums, or are they still affiliated with Backpacker Magazine? Just being nosy...

bp2go ? There was a time the forums fell apart, stopped doing much but error messages. A lot of people left, many on Facebook. Steve put this together pretty much on his own for which we are greatly thanking him again and again.

A good analogy would be the fall of Rome, followed by the dark ages. Welcome to the Renaissance.

Loosely affiliated, for the present. They don't seem to want anything to do with this site. Haven't seen anyone from BP'er in several months now.
Welcome to you! Stick around. You might teach us something.

none seem to explain what happened For a short recap, check this: bpbasecamp.freeforums.net/post/471/threadI thought your name was familiar. Glad to see you found it with Google! I'm still working on SEO stuff, but it does seem to work (we come up high on the list, hehe heh. Before the magazine site! Heh heh. Yes, the idea was to be connected to the magazine, it's just an open question right now. HQ is not terribly supportive as you experienced when you went to the website and didn't see a way to find the forum! Isn't that great? Good thing lots of old-forum folks were collectively working on Facebook, a call to those gave us a good start of 200 returning members.

Diana, I think you may have been the person who suggested the route that first brought me to the forums in 2004 (I can't figure out a way to say that intelligibly). I was searching for a hike in the Sangres we could do with our 5 & 6 y.o. sons. You suggested the Phantom Terrace. For the record, the older of those two boys is now in college in CO Springs Anyway, welcome back. We're having a good time here, with or without any input from HQ

But seriously. The family-friendly answer to your question is, quite simply: bp2go .....who rescued us from certain doom

Rebecca - nope, wasn't me. I'm from Indiana and have (sadly) only hiked and backpacked within about an 8 hour radius of here.
orygawn - hahaha! I should have seen that coming from someone...

TDale and BigLoad - Hi again! Glad to see you guys here! I'm not sure how active a member I'll be, with as busy as I unfortunately seem to find myself, but it's good to know the community (and the good morning thread, lol) is still going strong.

Hi Diana! How are the Indiana Dunes these days?
I've moved west, now in Colorado.
I hope all is well with you!

HQ is not terribly supportive as you experienced when you went to the website and didn't see a way to find the forum! Actually, bp2go, on the backpacker.com website, if you go to the "Connect" tab, the drop down menu lists "Forums". When you click on that it takes you to this site. Thought you might like to know, if you did not already.
