I just discovered this:

A grin does. Pure smile of : ) comes out But for some reason, all the rest of the smilies on this site are weirder than you can imagine. Including what most of us think of as a frown/sad face, i.e. : ( coming out as :(
This is the biggest complaint I have about our new forums, so I have to say Steve has done pretty well by us! You can add your own smileys, but I have no idea how.

The Explanation:
Last summer, when I was new to the ways of this software, I wanted to customize the list of little traditional Smilies. There were maybe 20 tiny faces which, I confess, I could barely understand. So I went looking for more, wanting both happier emotions and a larger size. In the garden forum I had built for my first understanding of how the software could be modified, I was asked by the garden folks to increase the size of the text. I experimented and succeeded , and that forum was tweaked to satisfaction.
Coincidentally, with that forum working, the old BP forums were so broken I offered some ideas to HQ, offering to build a demo to show how they could fix things! They said okay. I revised my garden forum to make a BP forum, and the day it was ready for HQ to even try it, the real forum crashed! As moderator, I asked HQ about that. HQ was not aware! They were stuck with a totally fubar forum, asked if I could open the demo, and here we are, 10 months later.
Oh, the weird smilies? I was so busy just adding funny new faces, etc., that I was missing the fact that each old smiley had a keystroke combo that a user would type in. I actually figured people would simply pop the visual menu and choose. Oops! So until I take the time to revise everything, I suggest using the visual menu, lest you type code for a tearful face and get a dancing banana instead.

Oh my. Didn't realize a smilie face would show up as a chicken dancing.
